St. Francis Catholic High School’s Robotics Team Partners on the Robots for Good Project
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sacramento, Calif. – April 12, 2016
St. Francis Catholic High School’s Robotics team is proud to announce its partnership with the Sacramento Kings, WeVolver, and Jesuit High School Robotics on the Inmoov Robots for Good Project. Launched at Tech Night at Sleep Train Arena on April 5, 2016, this project combines two open-source hardware projects that will help hospitalized children experience the sights and sounds of a Kings game.
The first two components are completely 3D printed using open-source plans from WeVolver. The top is a humanoid robot called Inmoov, which sits upon an open-source Segway called Open Wheels. Kids in the hospital can control the movements of the robot using a controller or their movements with an Xbox Kinect. The robot’s eyes are two cameras which stream live images to an Oculus Rift headset back at the hospital. A group of makers in London has been working on this project for about a year to help send children at the London Hospital to the Zoo in virtual reality.
This project will be made possible by networks of schools and makerspaces working together. Our team will work alongside Jesuit’s as lead builders for the project over the course of the next year. The founder of Inmoov will assist the teams in the build process, along with the founders of WeVolver. WeVolver is an open source hardware platform for people around the world to share their ideas, much like Github, but for hardware. The company was honored with the 2016 Innovation Award at the South by Southwest Festival in the category of Interactive 3-DIY.
