Tennis Defeats Davis 7-2

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team used its depth and lineup strength to post a 7-2 win over Davis on Tuesday.

“It is such a huge win,” said sophomore Peyton Spellacy. “Davis is such a fantastic team. I am really proud of my varsity girls that we pulled out a match. We played phenomenal.”

The Troubadours won four of six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches to clinch the win.

“Based on the matches last year, I knew it was going to be a close match,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “I had confidence this year we were deeper throughout our ladder. I have been telling the team that the doubles was going to pull us through and we won all of our matches today.”

Sophomore Peyton Spellacy and freshman Alex Evans showed the grit of the team, pulling out three-set comeback win to post the last point on the day for the team.

“It was our mindset,” said Spellacy of the difference in the match. “The physical aspect is part of the game. We saw each other get negative towards the last part of the first set. We told each other to slow down, breath and stay positive.  We pulled it out in the tiebreaker. I could not be more proud of my partner Alex.”

The duo lost the first set 3-6 but regrouped.

“The coaches played a big part in it,” said Evans of the comeback. “We started to get negative and make a lot of unforced errors. (Coach) Kristi (Spector) gave us some good advice about slowing down and starting over.”

Spellacy and Evans won the second set 6-4 and clinched the match with a 10-2 win in the tiebreaker.

“Instead of playing as individuals on the court, we are starting to play more as a team,” said Evans.

St. Francis also got wins by sophomore Cameron Parra and freshman Izzy Asker at No. 1 and sophomores Bianca Ariza and Sam Sonntag at No. 3.

“The girls were having fun out there and supporting each other,” said Spector. “We had the whole team out supporting and we have been working really hard on the mental part of the game. If you have a bad point, regroup, focus and move one. The girls did that today and it helped the overall win.”

The Troubies also got points in singles from Adithi Benush at No. 2, Alisha Anwar at No. 3, Kyla Jackson at No. 4 and Kiya Jackson at No. 6.

Overall three freshman contributed to the win on Tuesday.

“I love all of our freshman and everyone is a great asset to the team,” said Spellacy. “Alex is my dubs partner and she is a really solid player. I knew her from over the summer and I could not wait to play with her and make the special bond I see a lot of professional doubles teams make. We are really starting to mesh together and find each other’s strengths and weaknesses and noting that to help us win games.”
