SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Alexa Edwards had 10 kills and 19 digs as St. Francis posted a 3-0 win over Oak Ridge in the season opener for both squads Wednesday night.

“We feel really accomplished even though it is the beginning of the season,” said Edwards. “We have been putting in the work at practice. But just because we won the first two games (Foundation vs. Roseville), we still have to put in the work. We are really excited to see what we do this season.”

St. Francis (1-0) won in straight sets 25-21, 25-17, 25-18. Sophomore Malia Berry recorded eight kills in her first official varsity action. Mady Schildmeyer had 28 assists, while Aubrey Kenny contributed 12 digs.

“I thought we played pretty consistently and we didn’t give up too many runs of points,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “We had lots of players contribute at different times. Our defense was better tonight. It is one of the things we are working on. It was a good team win and we took over what they wanted to do.”

“We are really excited about the bus ride,” said Edwards. “The team is together the whole night and we have dinner together. It is a great team-bonding experience. All the matches we are going to play are going to set the tone for the games next week.

”St. Francis will play three matches at Bishop Manogue in Pool 3 starting with Spanish Springs at 1 p.m. The Troubies also have matches against Madera at 3 p.m. and West at 6 p.m. St. Francis also won 2-1 in the Freshman game and 2-0 in the JV contest.
