Basketball Comeback Downs Davis in Roseville Elite
ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Down by seven heading into the final quarter, Head Coach Vic Pitton challenged his senior point guard. And she answered.
Senior Janae Fairbook scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the final quarter to help St. Francis erase the deficit and post a 77-69 victory over Delta League rival Davis in the third-place game of the Roseville Elite Showcase.
“I told her she had to penetrate and get to the free throw line,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We had to draw some fouls on them and so we would not run out of gas. She really took it to heart. She met the challenge in the fourth quarter.”
Fairbrook went 8-for-8 from the line and hit two key three-pointers in the comeback effort. She earned All-Tournament honors to cap off her tournament.
Senior Julia Razo added 20 points for her best game of the season after missing two games during the week.
“Julia played a fantastic game on both ends of the court which is not always the case,” said Pitton. “She was dominant down the stretch. She scored in every quarter and was ready to play.”
Razo held Davis’ leading scorer to six points with most of the points coming when she was out of the game with foul trouble in the third.
“It felt really good to be out there,” said Razo. “We kept our composure and mental strength.”
Davis took the lead in the third quarter with a 25-point effort while SF managed just nine points. St. Francis cut the lead with three triples including two by Fairbrook and one by Nika Bagatelos, who finished with nine points. Overall, they outscored the Blue Devils 27-12 in the quarter.
“Nika keeps coming off the bench hitting big threes for us and timely shots that we really need,” said Pitton.
Sophomore Megan Austin was named to the All-Defensive Team and added 10 points.
“It felt great,” said Austin of the comeback. “We all got back on D. It brought us back. I was working hard and did not want to let my girl score.”
Junior Marlee Nicolos was the team’s representative on the All-Hustle Team.
St. Francis returns to action on Dec. 19 at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Ariz.
