Ferguson to Continue Water Polo Career at Santa Clara
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Sally Ferguson, who scored the winning goal in the section championship match in 2015, will continue her water polo career at Santa Clara next season.
“I am really excited I get to extend my water polo career,” said Ferguson. “I would have been sad if it ended here. I am excited to be part of a team in college. It will definitely be a lot of fun.”
Ferguson will join a Santa Clara program coached by Keith Wilbur. He has recruited and coached six Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Americans, led both men’s and women’s programs to their best-ever seasons, including taking the women’s team to the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship game in 2009 and has twice been named WWPA Coach of the Year.
“The team and atmosphere were attractive at Santa Clara,” said Ferguson. “I can’t really describe it. Visiting a lot of college you are just visiting and touring. But if you are at somewhere you really want to be it is attractive. I can see myself here.”
Ferguson will join former teammate Maggie Oys on the Bronco roster.
“It is honestly a big part of it having a familiar face, knowing someone who has my back and had my back all through high school,” said Ferguson. “It is really cool.”
Ferguson earned all-section and all-league honors as a senior after leading the team in points (59) and finished second on the team with 35 goals.
“I am very excited that Sally has chosen to continue her water polo career at Santa Clara,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “Her work ethic and determination will help her be an impact player in collegiate polo. I wish her the best.”
Ferguson will look back on her Troubadour career fondly.
“It gave me a lot of confidence and helped me find my place at St. Francis and as a person,” said Ferguson. “I learned how to be a teammate and a leader, when to say something and when to not. It was a big part of my team at St. Francis and I appreciate all of it.”
She will participate in the St. Francis Signing Day celebration on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
