Freshman Sage Davis Leads Victory over Grant

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Sage Davis went 3-for-3 with two home runs and seven runs batted in to lead St. Francis to a 12-2 win over Grant in the Delta League opener.

“It feels good and exciting after starting 0-for-5 last weekend,” said Davis. “It felt good to get back in the routine of things.”

St. Francis opened the game with two runs in the first on a Grant error and RBI double by Gabbi Guerrera. Davis recorded her first career hit – a two-run blast off the TroubieTV tower in left-center field to push the lead to 5-0. Sydney Littles then doubled a scored when Bella Valentine reached on an error.

“I was just trying to hit the ball hard, line drive,” said Davis. “Coach Sean (Smith) always tells me to go there and hit hard. Don’t try to hit a home run.”

She homered again in her second plate appearance, scoring Arden Hatch, who had doubled to lead off the third inning.

“We have been waiting for her to do that in the first four games of the season,” said Head Coach Kevi Warren. “It was really nice. She had a good swing going. She hit two home runs out tonight and we have been expecting that from her. It is a warmup to what you are going to see in the future.”

Davis completed the scoring in the fifth with a three-run double that capped a five-run inning and put the team in position to 10-run the Pacers with a clean fifth inning. Davis was thinking about getting a third home run but was happy with the outcome.

“I was definitely swinging for it but got a double,” said Davis.

The Troubadours (3-2) got five solid innings by Caitlin Caldwell, who allowed two runs in the game.

Gabbi Guerrera added three hits and two RBI in the game.

“Gabbi hit the ball hard,” said Warren. “She is a line-drive hitter and hit the ball hard three times on the button. It was nice to see her do that.”

St. Francis had four games rained out over the last four games and had been anxious to get back on the field.

“It was encouraging and we definitely discouraged not getting to play last week and getting stuck in the Armory,” said Davis. “It felt good to back on the field again.”

The Troubadours will play Pleasant Grove on Saturday at 9 a.m. in a makeup for Thursday’s rain out.
