Logan Kelly to Play Basketball at Lewis & Clark

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior basketball player Logan Kelly will play at Division III Lewis & Clark in Portland, Ore., next fall, making her commitment official on April 11 at the St. Francis Spring Signing Day celebration.

“I am extremely excited and kinda nervous too,” said Kelly. “Playing basketball in college was something I always hoped I could do. Coming into my senior year, Lewis & Clark was where I wanted to be. After visiting over the summer, I got a feel for the campus and the people were amazing. It was exactly what I was looking for (in a school).”

Kelly, a four-year member of the varsity team after a call-up from the JV team her freshman season, averaged career-bests in every statistical category this year. She scored 6.7 points per game and grabbed 7.6 rebounds, recording six games in double figures with five double-digit rebound performances. She had a career-high 17 rebounds in the playoff game against Roseville.

“It was a great season,” said Kelly. “I could not have asked for a better season. I loved our entire team. We were all growing well together and it was sad we could not go farther. But we gave it all we had. It did not go exactly as planned but we got as far as we could get.”

Kelly earned All-Delta League honors and was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year.

“Logan Kelly exhibited an unparalleled work ethic,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton.  “She worked on her physical conditioning and skill development relentlessly and made herself into a competitive post even though often she was severely undersized.  Although she was physically overmatched at times, her heart never was, and that heart coupled with her work ethic earned her First Team Delta League recognition. As a coach you always love having players like Logan.”

Kelly was part of four Sac-Joaquin Section playoff teams, including the 2016 squad that reached the section finals, won the Division I NorCal title and advanced to the CIF State Championship game.

Kelly was inspired by her former teammates to reach for her goal of playing hoops in college. The program has produced players each of the last three seasons that have played at the next level.

“I saw the upper classman on the team my sophomore year and had the opportunity to play with them, knowing I could get there some day,” said Kelly referring to teammates Lauren Craig, Kyra Huffman and Tia Hay. “It was really cool and influenced me to see what I could do for myself.”

Kelly will play for Head Coach Pamela Findlay, who has led the Pioneers to back-to-back Northwest Conference appearances and a combined 30 wins over her first two seasons.

“I immediately loved the campus and the liberal arts program and what it has to offer” said Kelly of her visit to the camps. “I am leaning towards majoring in psychology.”

Kelly’s brother, Cole, attends the University of Oregon and will be able to see her play. Moving to Oregon, she will miss the St. Francis program and her interaction with her dad Mike, who served as the freshman coach this season.

“We both have such a love for sports so it always something cool that we had in common,” said Kelly. “We both enjoy working hard and basketball became something we could enjoy together.”

Kelly will participate in the St. Francis Signing Day Celebration on April 11 at 8:30 a.m. in the CLC.
