Mile, Sprints, Hurdles and Relays Highlight Second Day at Stanford
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Junior Sydney Vandegrift ran the second-fastest time in school history in the mile, finishing 12th in the mile in 5:03.08 and the Troubadours had several performances in the relays and sprints to wrap up the action at the second day of the Stanford Invitational.
“It is such a great opportunity to run with these fast girls,” said Vandegrift. “We talked about staying in a good position and being a little more ambitious.”
Vandegrift just missed the school record in the event set by Peyton Bilo in 2015 (5:02.21).
“I am happy about that (the performance) and hopefully I can convert that into a sub-five,” said Vandegrift.
St. Francis had two performers in the 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore Serena Shimada clocked a time of 16.05 to finish fourth. Senior Elizabeth Hennessy was sixth in the same heat in 16.15. They finished 18th and 23rd overall.
“I felt OK about my race,” said Shimada. “It was great to race against such a fast field. It pushes me a lot and helps me a lot. There was a lot of adrenaline being in the race.”
In the 100 meters, senior Meaghan Rogers recorded a 12.50 to place fourth in her heat.
In the relays, the Troubie 4×100-meter relay (Rogers, Hennessy, Ally Shebert and Isabelle Grassel) advanced to the final with a time of 49.33 that ranked sixth overall after crossing the line second in the fourth heat. The team did not finish the final.
The 4×400-meter relay wrapped up the competition with a season-best 4:07.20 in the final girls race of the day.
