Soccer Season Ends in 1-0 Loss to Folsom
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis soccer team lost to Folsom 1-0 Friday in the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals. It was the second 1-0 loss to Folsom this season.
“It is extremely disappointing,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “Give credit to Folsom. They came out, hustled and worked for it and won almost every ball in the air. We did not get in a rhythm. This was not our best.”‘
The game was scoreless in the first half as both teams looked to get momentum in the contest. The 14th-seeded Folsom Bulldogs had advanced with a 2-0 win upset over No. 3 Turlock on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs scored in the second half to take a 1-0 lead and the Troubadours were not able to tie it.
“There was a bit of a collision and we stood and looked it and it squirted right to them,” said Robinson. “She made a nice little play and she was unmarked. It was a fluke play.”
Sophomore Sydney Galvan, who was called up from the junior varsity team, had a solid game in the net, making several saves in the game.
“It is not easy coming into a brand new team in the playoffs and stepping up,” said Robinson. “Outside of the weird play, she managed everything. Clean and there was nothing scary. She did some nice change of tempo. I was very pleased.”
Robinson also credited freshman Marli Berry for her performance in the game.
“Marli Berri was an absolute bright spot today,” said Robinson. “She played with toughness and won balls in the air. She did things we usually do.”
Robinson said goodbye to her senior class, including six who played on Wednesday. The 2017 seniors include Ari Avila, Darby Carrillo, Kaitlyn Hendrickson, Abby Padilla, Savannah Tijerino-Santos, Aly Shebert and Meridith Wong.
“Our seniors have been such a bright spot,” said Robinson. “They are enjoyable people to be around and that is the thing about St. Francis – the quality of the individual is bar none.”
St. Francis finished the season with a 15-5-4 record.
“We wanted it so much but we could not get out of our own way,” said Robinson.
