SACRAMENTO, Calif. -The St. Francis softball team recorded their first Delta League win with a 14-3 victory over Grant on Monday.

“I was really excited to see them hit the ball hard today,” said Head Coach Kevin Warren. “We had the three home runs and couple hit real hard right at people.”

St. Francis had a season-high 14 hits and scored 14 runs as five players recorded two or more hits I the contest. Chloe Smith, Makayla Scott and Mary Baccay had home runs in the game. Catcher Julia Perkins recorded a career-high three hits in three at bats.

“It feels great because I have been struggling a bit and not waiting on the ball,” said Perkins. “I got on the ball today, scored some runs and had some RBIs..”

St. Francis scored three in the first highlighted by a run-scoring double by Mary Baccay, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the contest. SF add three in the second aided by a grant error that allowed two to score and a Lauren Washburn double to push the lead to six.

Caitlin Caldwell pitched four innings, allowing just one run on five hits to get the win. Jada Kanemasu pitched the final two innings to seal the win.

“I think it went pretty good (today),” said Caldwell. “My spins were not the best so I need to work on going at the hitters more. It was not just me. We had a whole team effort.”

Caldwell did not walk a batter and recorded seven strikeouts.

“I thought she threw really well,” said Warren. “She had some pop on the ball and good movement. I was very pleased with her performance.”

Caldwell improved to 3-3 on the season.

“She hit her spots very well,” said Perkins, who caught her behind the plate. “Her changeups were working and she was hitting the outside corner.”

Junior Kennedy Hornbuckle and sophomore Chloe Smith each contributed two hits in the win.

St. Francis closed out the win with  two runs off the Smith homer in the fifth and  six-run eighth that ended the game via the 10-run mercy rule.

“It is good to get some wins in and helps our confidence,” said Caldwell.

St. Francis travels to Davis on Tuesday and hosts Elk Grove on Thursday.

“The strategy is to win two more,” said Warren. “Davis has a very good team and Elk Grove has been playing very well. It is going to be an exciting week.”
