SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Sarah Westover has committed to play lacrosse at USC and will sign with the Trojans on Nov. 9.

“This year after my official visit and being in the life of USC, I am really excited to get there and experience it,” said Westover, who originally committed to the Trojans as a sophomore. “They are such a family. They are all about winning as well as your well-being.”

The Trojans are coming off the best season in school history. They won the Mountain Pacific Sports Foundation title, becoming the first team in history to go undefeated in league and postseason play.

“The girls are all sisters and coming from the Troubie sisterhood I am all in on the culture,” said Westover.

They went 20-1 overall with the only loss coming in the NCAA quarterfinals in overtime to Syracuse.

“They are the only non-East Coast school in the top five and the only West Coast school to the NCAA playoffs,” said Westover. “They are really good and they are climbing. They just keep going up.”

Westover will play for Head Coach Lindsey Munday, who has led USC to the NCAA Tournament each of the last two seasons. She was a two-time NCAA Champion at Northwestern and her accolades both as a player and as a coach earned her recognition as Lacrosse Magazine’s 2013 Person of the Year.

“Lindsey is amazing,” said Westover. “She is the goddess of lacrosse.”

Westover is excited to play for the standout coaching staff, including assistant Devon Wills who has been the goalie for the United States team since 2007.

“They are both amazing and played for team USA and won World Cups,” said Westover. “They are really cool people and all about lacrosse.”

Westover, who lives in Latrobe, first got into lacrosse in the fifth grade and started playing club the next year. She plays for Bay Area Wave out of Danville.

“As I got further into playing, I knew I wanted to play in college,” said Westover. “I did not know if I wanted to go DI but I was always told I good enough to go DI.”

Westover, a three-time letter winner on the St. Francis team, has scored 83 career goals for the Troubadours and recorded 21 assists. She had a breakout season as a junior, scoring a career-high 45 goals with nine assists for a team-best 54 points. She was named to the Sacramento Valley Lacrosse Conference first team and was named the team’s Offensive MVP. But she wants to get better in 2017.

“I want to be faster and stronger,” said Westover. “That is how I have always been. I want to be able to walk in (to USC) and be an equal with all of them. Obviously, I am going to be a freshman but I want to be able to match them, play to their level and to be as aggressive and strong.”

Westover has developed her leadership skills playing for the SF team under Spenser Ruvalcaba and Julia Southard.

“I have learned to be a leader and lead by example,” said Westover. “I want to be a leader people want to look up to and not be too aggressive. During the St. Francis season, it has taught me being able to be a team player and build the family atmosphere.”

Westover and her teammates begin play in February.

“As seniors, we have made the goal to have the team be more of a family,” said Westover. “We want a team where everyone is equal and knows each other and feels really comfortable around each other especially the younger girls on the varsity team and the JV girls looking up to the varsity players. It is really important.”

Westover will sign her official National Letter of Intent at a ceremony at the school on Nov. 9.
