Basketball Wins Road Game at Sheldon
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Lauren Craig posted her seventh double-double to lead St. Francis to a 54-43 win over Sheldon Friday night in a Delta River League game.
“It is always nice to go into hostile territory and get the win,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We made some mistakes. Overall, our composure is continuing to improve. Once we broke their press, we took advantage and had some good looks.”
Craig scored 10 points in the first half to help the Troubadours build a six-point lead at the break 27-21. In the second half, she hit three more baskets and went 6-for-6 at the line in the fourth quarter to finish with 22 points in the contest. She added 11 rebounds.
“She continues to amaze me,” said Pitton. “She had another double-double and she plays with a smile on her face, which is pretty special.”
Junior Susie Rogers returned to action after missing one game due to injury. She contributed 11 points, five boards and two assists.
“Her composure and her ability to handle the ball against pressure is something we need and a big plus,” said Pitton.
St. Francis (11-6, 2-0 DRL) extended their lead to double digits in the second half and were never threatened over the final 16 minutes.
“It was fun winning,” said Rogers. “We did well maintaining our lead throughout the whole game and playing as a team.”
Senior Abby Dow added eight points and eight rebounds. Raven Robison scored five points, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the third quarter. Kristen Lau had four points in the game.
“We can always do better,” said Rogers, “We had some turnovers we could have avoided. Overall, I think we are getting better.”
The Troubadours return to action Saturday afternoon at home against Kennedy starting with the freshmen game at 2 p.m. The JV team, which posted a 61-31 win over Sheldon, plays at 3:30 p.m. The varsity game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
“Kennedy is pretty good so we will see how we do,” said Rogers.
