Basketball Wins Viking Classic in Chico

CHICO, Calif. – The St. Francis basketball team defeated Eureka 58-32 Saturday in the championship game of the 41st Annual Viking Classic hosted by Pleasant Valley High School. Senior Susie Rogers was the named the tournament MVP and Lauren Craig and Angie Ortiz were both named to the all-tournament team.

“Susie was the catalyst the whole tournament,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “Lauren and Angie were both great on the offensive end of the floor.”

St. Francis (4-0) led at the half 28-21 behind eight points by junior Kyra Huffman and seven by Rogers. The Troubadours closed out the title with a strong defensive effort in the second, holding the Loggers to just 11 points.

“The depth of our team was a real advantage,” said Pitton. “We were able to wear them out in the second half.”

Craig finished with a team-best 12 points, while Rogers and Ortiz each added 10 points in the win.

St. Francis advanced to the championship game with wins over Downey 77-29 in the opener on Thursday. Four players scored in double figures led by sophomore Janae Fairbrook with 12 points. Maureen Cobile, Huffman and Ortiz each scored 11 in the win.

On Friday, St. Francis defeated host Pleasant Valley 61-54. Craig scored a team-best 18 points and Fairbrook and Julia Razo each notched 10 points.

St. Francis plays in Claude Brock Tournament at Center High School starting on Thursday.
