SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Janae Fairbrook scored a career-best 21 points and Kyra Huffman recorded a double-double to lead St. Francis to a 66-55 victory over Kennedy Saturday afternoon.

Fairbrook hit four three-pointers, including two in the first quarter, among her seven baskets in the game.

“She was looking for her shot which we have been encouraging her to do all season,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “She knocked down the opportunities. Not only did she have 21 points but she played some great defense on the point of our zone. She got a lot of deflections and steals which really helped propel our fast break.”

Fairbrook recorded seven steals in the contest.

Huffman posted 13 points and a career-best 18 rebounds for a double-double. She scored three first quarter baskets which fueled an early 19-9 lead after the first eight minutes.

“I did not do very good in the first half yesterday so I tried to make it my mission to come out strong in the first half today,” said Huffman.

In the second quarter, Kennedy out-scored the Troubadours 23-7 with the help of five three-pointers to take a six-point lead into the locker room.

“We certainly had a bad second quarter and looked like we fell into some bad habits,” said Pitton. “In the second half we reasserted ourselves especially the dominance on the boards. I thought Kyra did a great job on the boards. Aliyah Williams gave us some good minutes and Angie Ortiz was an outstanding leader.”

Fairbrook said the team regrouped after Pitton’s halftime talk.

“He told us to start communicating and talking on D so we can get out on the shooters more,” said Fairbrook.

St. Francis (11-5) took the lead back for good on a Susie Rogers layup with 4:12 left and went into the fourth quarter with a 48-44 lead after a Yvonna Molodanof three-pointer in the final seconds.

“Our halftime put it in perspective that we need to assert our dominance over this team and that we were capable of winning,” said Huffman. “We are really coming together as a team.”

In the fourth, the Troubadours went on a 9-0 run to start the period and extend their lead to 57-44 and closed the game out by making 8 of 12 free throws over the final minutes.

Overall, the Troubadours hit seven three-pointers in the contest including a fourth-quarter triple by Maureen Cobile.

“We were in it together and saw the openings for the three-point shots,” said Fairbrook. “It really helped.”

Junior Lauren Craig grabbed seven boards and had four blocks to go with her 10 points. Ortiz finished with six points and Williams added four in the win.

St. Francis returns to Delta League action with a home game on Tuesday against Franklin. The game is the annual Booster Q event hosted by the St. Francis Booster Club. The JV team opens the night with their game starting at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be shown online on TroubieTV.
