Homers Power Softball to Playoff Win
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Akeylah Moses and Shelby Tevis hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning as part of a five-run sixth to help St. Francis post a 9-7 win over McClatchy in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs Thursday night.
“It was really fun,” said Tevis, who hit two home runs in the game. “We did not make it my freshmen year past the first round of the playoffs. Some people don’t get this chance. I was really shocked but I was happy I could do it.”
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Tevis tied the game with a solo home run.
“It felt really good to go to home plate with my teammates cheering me on,” said Tevis.
Moses followed with a solo shot of her own to put the Troubies up 6-5. It would spark a five-run inning.
“She hit two home runs and now I have to go up to bat and here after that,” said Moses, who hit her first high school home run. “I am thinking, “What am I going to do. Oh my goodness!” Then, I hit a home run. I was shocked. I was not expecting it.”
McClatchy rallied for two runs in the seventh but St. Francis finally recorded the final out with the potential winning run at the plate.
Tevis also homered in the second inning to tie the game at 1.
The Troubies had built a 4-1 lead before McClatchy tied the game at four with a three-run home run. Jada Kanemasu left the game after the home run, allowing four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. Kelsea Williams closed out the inning and the game, pitching the final 2.1 innings for the win.
St. Francis advances to a second round game on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Bella Vista, a 13-0 winner over Franklin of Stockton.
