Lacrosse Wins 10-9 over Palo Alto
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – Freshman Jade Borg scored the game winner with 13 seconds remaining to help St. Francis to a 10-9 victory over Palo Alto Saturday in rainy and blustery conditions at Mather Sports Complex.
“It was really good,” said Borg of the game winner. “It was a nice assist. It was hard at the beginning (playing in the conditions) but you just had to push past the rain. In the end, you did not notice it was raining.”
Borg’s goal, one her three on the day, came in the final seconds on an assist by Sarah Westover.
“It was definitely really hard with our sticks,” said Westover. “They were getting really slippery and (hard) keeping the ball in our sticks. We had to not let the fact it was remaining be an obstacle for us. Towards the end we pulled together but it was a struggle during the game.
St. Francis (2-2) trailed at the half 3-3 but rallied in the second behind five second-half goals by Westover. The game was tied at 5 and 6 but the Troubadours pulled ahead 8-6.
Palo Alto came back to tie the game at 8 before Megan Hoffeditz scored for a 9-8 lead but the Vikings scored again off a turnover to tie the game at 9 setting up Westover’s key pass to Borg for the winner.
“That was really exciting,” said Westover of the final goal. “We were all in the moment. I was really confident that Jade was going to catch it. She was right there and she has really good stick skills.”
The Troubadours held off the final push by Palo Alto in the final seconds and got a stop by freshman Kate Macintyre as the final horn sounded.
“The key was to not let them pass and stop them,” said Westover. “We had five behind the line and really focused on not letting have that score. Kate having that save was awesome. She really helped us out with that save.”
St. Francis plays at Oak Ridge at 5:30 (JV) and 7:30 p.m. (Varsity on Tuesday.
