Pleasant Grove Spoils Senior Night for Basketball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis managed just eight points in the first half and 15 over the first three quarters as Pleasant Grove posted a 47-33 victory to spoil the Senior Night festivities at the game.
“I wish I had an explanation for it,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “The first half we were not ready to play again. They were so excited about Senior Night and were really going to come out and be energized. It just didn’t happen. It falls on the coach to have his team ready to play and we were not ready to play.”
St. Francis (15-10, 5-4) honored Gillian Balbierz, Amanda Davenport, Abby Dow, Sarah England, Kristen Lau and Raven Robinson in a pre-game ceremony. Unfortunately it was the most exciting performance of the night.
“It is the one thing we can take pride in is that we did not give up,” said Pitton. “We fought until the last second of the game. We have to understand we need to play with that sense of urgency from the beginning and not wait until it is almost hopeless.”
Pleasant Grove’s Kim Schmelz and Brittney Nguyen each scored 15 points in the contest. Schmelz scored 12 of her points in the first half, while Phu had three triples in the first half. The Eagles led 30-8 at the break and 41-15 after three quarters.
The Troubadours showed some life in the fourth, posting an 18-point quarter. But it was too little too late.
Susie Rogers and Lauren Craig each scored eight points in the contest.
St. Francis plays its final home games on Monday against Clovis West. The Junior Varsity game starts at 2:30 p.m., while the varsity contest will begin at 4:00 p.m. The Troubadours travel to Folsom on Tuesday night to close the regular season.
Playoff brackets will be announced on Wednesday.
