Softball Defeated by Christian Brothers in Albie Swingin’ for Life Event
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis softball team was defeated 6-4 by Christian Brothers Saturday in the third game of the Albie Swingin’ for Life Softball Tournament held at St. Francis. Pioneer defeated River City 8-3 and Davis handed Rio Linda a 16-3 loss earlier in the afternoon.
Christian Brothers Haley Snyder shut down St. Francis over the final 3.1 innings out of the bullpen as the Falcons overcame a 4-3 deficit to post the win.
Synder homered in the first inning to put CB up early in the game 1-0. The Falcons extended the lead to 3-0 on an RBI single by Kristen Gruber.
St. Francis cut into the lead in the next inning on a run-scoring single by senior Alexis Viramontes, who finished 2-for-4 on the day. Akeylah Moses then knocked in a run and scored on a ground out by Amy Marks to tie the game. Pinch runner Bella Stolo scored on a passed ball to give the Troubadours the lead 4-3.
“I thought we stayed in and battled,” said Co-Head Coach Kevin Warren. “Both pitchers for Christian Brothers are great pitchers and are seniors. I thought our girls played well.”
Christian Brothers responded with two in the bottom of the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Megan Garren took the loss, allowing six runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings.
“By far one of her better performances,” said Warren. “She still is not throwing as many strikes as I would like. But she did great. We had a few mistakes in the field that cost her some runs and a walk cost her a run. Take those away and it was a different ball game.”
The Troubadours return to Delta River League action this week with games at Oak Ridge and Sheldon.
Six schools participated in the breast cancer benefit sponsored by the Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation including Davis Senior, Christian Brothers, Pioneer, Rio Linda, River City and host St. Francis.
Albie Aware was created in 2002 in the memory of Albie Ciucci Carson, St. Francis Class of ‘65, who lost her battle with breast cancer. Despite Albie’s vigilance and post treatment follow-ups, she was not referred for additional, available screening modalities that would have shown that her cancer had spread. Albie’s husband, Doug Carson, created this foundation to help save the lives of other women and men by assisting with education and testing: things he felt were missing from Albie’s treatments.
Albie Aware is dedicated to the early detection and treatment of breast cancer through education, awareness, and testing. The Foundation provides support services to those diagnosed with breast cancer.
