Softball Season Ends in Section Playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis softball team lost twice on Saturday and was eliminated from the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.

“I thought we had good momentum going into it, but we were flat today,” said Head Coach Kevin Warren. “We faced two good pitchers back-to-back. After the first game, we scored two runs in the first inning in the second game and I thought we were back on track.”

The 12th-seeded Troubadours lost in the winner’s bracket Saturday afternoon to No. 4 Del Campo 6-0, forcing an elimination game against No. 9 Elk Grove Saturday night. St. Francis opened with two runs in the first inning on a Shelby Tevis single that scored Mel and Mary Baccay.

Elk Grove rallied for four runs to take the lead in the bottom of the first and scored two in the fourth and four in the fifth to extend the lead.

Senior Emily Ainsley took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits over one inning. Junior Jada Kanemasu and freshman Caitlin Caldwell relieved out of the bullpen but the Troubies never scored again in the contest. Elk Grove’s Courtney Riley got the win, pitching a complete game for the Thundering Herd.

St. Francis finishes 14-12-1 on the season after a third-place finish in the Delta League with a 9-5 record. They opened the postseason with a 5-2 win over No. 5 seed Vintage on Wednesday.

The game was the final contest for five seniors who played their final game in the red and gold.

“The seniors were valuable (this season),” said Warren. “Losing five players, they are going to be very difficult to replace. They worked their tails off all year and were a big part of our success.”

After a 2-6 start, the Troubadours went 12-4-1 over the final 17 games to make the postseason for the second consecutive season.

“I could not be prouder,” said Warren. “We had the five seniors but we had quite a few underclassmen who looked up to the older kids. They played very well especially in the second half.”

Akeylah Moses went 2-for-3 in her final game to lead the offensive attack. Mel Baccay, who will play at Michigan State next fall, Hannah Willover and Shelby Tevis also represent the Class of 2016.

Baccay and Tevis will represent St. Francis in the Optimist All-Star game on June 1.
