Swimming Wins Delta River League Title
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – The St. Francis swimming team won the Delta River League title for the sixth consecutive season, recording an impressive 19 event wins Saturday at the El Dorado Hills swimming complex.
“It was a strong performance,” said Head Coach Richard Levin. “I was really pleased with the swims. The kids came together as a team. They swam fast and swam hard to come out on top.”
Seniors Maddie Johnson and AnnClaire MacArt and sophomore Chloe Mitchell each won two events Saturday.
Johnson, who will swim at TCU next season, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:13.97 as the Troubadours took the top two spots. Junior Erin Crooks was second in 2:14.74. Johnson also won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.85.
MacArt, who will swim for Dartmouth next fall, set the tone for the Troubadours by winning the opening individual event, capturing the 200-yard freestyle in a meet record 1:52.67. She broke the record recorded by Natalie Green last season by almost three seconds (1:55.35). She also won the 100 freestyle in 52.52.
“It felt really good,” said MacArt. “I was really happy with that (record). It was great to finish first in my best events. I had a lot of adrenaline today, especially in the relays.”
Mitchell won the 500 freestyle by 13 seconds in a time of 5:04.43, setting a new DRL meet record in the process. She broke the 2005 mark set by KatieAnn Mills of 5:06.10.
“It felt really good,” said Mitchell. “I was looking at the meet record yesterday. I made into finals with a 5:09 and today I went out and got the 200 split I needed. I felt really good as far as the rest of the race.”
Mitchell came back to record a season-best 59.99 to win the 100 backstroke
St. Francis won all three relays – the 200 IM, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.
“It was cool to see the team finish really well,” said MacArt. “Everyone, especially the freshmen, they really stepped up which was really cool to get that team effort in. You feel really proud of your team and your school.”
Senior Alexis Martinez, a Seattle University signee, was the top finisher in the 50 freestyle, finishing third on 25.63. She also was fifth in the 100 freestyle in 56.97.Freshman Elizabeth Fugit was fifth in the 50 in 25.84, sophomore Emily Peters was sixth in 26.01 and Alyssa Tambornini was eighth in 26.60.
Other top finishers included Tatum Roepke, who finished third in both the 100 butterfly (1:01.07) and 500 freestyle (5:26.93). Fugit also was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.45, while junior Kristen Lance was the top finisher in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.43 ahead of teammates freshman Samantha Gates in fourth in 1:13.26 and Lilly Murphy in sixth (1:16.37). Sophomore Katie McIntee was sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:05.72) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (58.11). Gates and Taylor Koewler were fifth and sixth in the 100 butterfly. Junior Cameron Cunningham was fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:43.50). Peters also finished sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.07).
“It is a good problem to have that our team is so deep that we have a lot of section qualifiers,” said Levin. “We have a lot of underclassman qualifying for varsity so we have a lot of tough decisions to make in terms of who swims where.”
Overall, St. Francis had 32 finals appearances, including 25 in the top eight.
In the Frosh/Soph meet, the Troubadours won 10 of 11 events and had 23 finals appearances. Individual event winners included Sally Ferguson in the 200 free (2:09.31) and 100 butterfly (1:04.50), Rylee Arnot in the 50 free (26.99) and 100 backstroke (1:06.28), Caroline Rojas in the 100 freestyle (1:00.48), McKenna Peterson in the 500 freestyle (5:46.97), Laila Akhavi in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.71). They also won all three relays.
“This is one of my favorite meets,” said Mitchell. “Last year as a freshman, I was the underdog and it was fun getting to know the girls better. This year is was fun to help the freshmen get in a groove and embrace the Troubie spirit.”
The section meet begins Friday, May 9 with trials with finals on Saturday at Bella Vista.
