Track and Field Garners Delta League Co-Championship

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team was second at the Delta League Championships Friday night and finished as co-champions with Davis based on the overall points system that incorporates the regular season dual meets. The Troubadours went 7-0 in dual meets.

“It was our first year in a very tough league and we are co-champions,” said Head Coach Randall Fairchild. “I am really proud of our team and the accomplishment.”

St. Francis advanced 15 varsity athletes into the Sac-Joaquin Section trials on Wednesday. The top four in each event advanced to the meet and at-large qualifers.

Junior Ariane Arndt continued her impressive season with three Delta League titles. She set a personal-best in winning the 400 meters in 56.38 and won the 800m with a late kick that secured her title with a time of 2:16.62. She also led off the 4×400-meter relay team, staking the team to a lead that helped the team capture the race. She also ran on the 4×100m relay team.

Senior Peyton Bilo was second in both the 1600 and 3200 meter races, while classmate Miranda Myers was fourth and third, respectively. Junior Chase Worthen also qualified in the 1600m.

Junior Nicole Spring won the long jump with a leap of 17-5 after setting a school-record in the triple jump to advance in both events.

“The first three jumps did not go as planned but I just focused on the last three,” said Spring. “I pulled it out and got a PR. Hopefully, I can PR again next week.”

Senior Sam Ruggles was third overall in the discus after winning the shot put last week. Sophomore Elizabeth Hennessy advanced in both hurdle events, placing second in the 300mh and third in the 100mh. Senior Sydney Hunter also will run two individual events, qualifying in the 200 and 400 meter events.

Both relays also will compete for section titles. The 4×400-meter relay won the league title with Arndt, Hennessy, Lily Enes and Hunter. Arndt, Hunter and Enes joined Kiani Reyna to finish second in the opening 4×100-meter event.

Sophomore Alyssa Shebert won the Frosh/Soph 100 meters and was part of both relays. The 4×400-meter relay of Sherbert, Katherine Gaston, Tori Kane, Caitlin Hipol won their event and combined to finish fourth in the 4×100-meter relay. Gaston was second in the 100 meters and third in the 200. Hipol was fourth in the 400m, while Steffi Keene was fourth in the 300m hurdles. Sarah Rice was fourth in the shot put.

St. Francis is the defending section champion. The section meet will be held at Elk Grove High School on Wednesday with the top eight advancing to the finals on Friday and next eight for the consolation finals. The top 12 in each event advance to the Masters meet a week later.

The running events start at 3 p.m. with the shot put and triple jump starting at 4:30 p.m. The discus and long jump finals will be contested on Friday.
