Track Assistant Myers Wins Age Group at Napa Valley Marathon
NAPA, Calif. – St. Francis assistant coach Mason Myers won his age group and finished 14th overall in his debut at the marathon distance at the Napa Valley Marathon March 2. The Carmichael, Calif., resident clocked 2:45.45 after posting a 6:16 pace over the first half of the race and 6:20 over the back 13 plus miles.
Myers ran competitively in high school and college and then took an 18-year break from the sport. In high school, he earned third place in the 3,200 meter race at the 1987 California State High School Track and Field Championships in 9:05. In 1989, he won the California state junior college title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. At age 38, he rediscovered his attraction for road racing and cross country. Since then, as a Masters (age 40 and over) athlete, Myers has recorded excellent marks at distances from 1 mile (4:45) to half marathon (1:15:24).
Myers has assisted with the St. Francis cross country program for the last three seasons, coaching the distance athletes in the spring during the track and field season. Myers has two daughters at St. Francis, Miranda and Avery.
