Water Polo Gets Four Goals from Oys in 11-8 Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Maggie Oys scored four goals including three in the fourth quarter to help St. Francis to an 11-8 victory over Granite Bay Tuesday night at Jesuit High School.

“I was excited that we scored 11 goals,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “We have been struggling offensively pretty much all season. It is exciting to see the girls applying what we have been working on and getting the goals in there.”

The Troubadours (13-8) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and never trailed in the contest. Granite Bay pulled to within 4-3 at halftime but St. Francis took control in the second half.

Senior Brinnley Barthels scored the second of her two goals early in the third off an assist by Julie Zanobini, who followed with her second goal of the game to extend the lead to 6-3. The period ended with the Troubies up 7-4.

But the Grizzlies cut the lead to 7-5 on the first possession of the final quarter but never got any closer. Oys scored three times over a 4:22 span to seal the game for St. Francis.

“Today was our Sports Day at school and it meant a lot,” said Oys. “We were tired and our voices are hoarse but we came together and did the best we could. We established ourselves as a team. The goals personally do not mean anything. It is the team, whoever is open gets the ball and they are team goals.”

Oys led three players with two or more goals, including junior Lauren Charter. Emily Reinl also scored for the Troubadours.

St. Francis hosts Davis Senior on Tuesday in an anticipated rematch from the section championships last season.
