Water Polo’s Lauren Charter Named Lacky Scholarship Award Winner
LODI, Calif. – St. Francis senior Lauren Charter was named one of 48 winners of the A. Dale Lacky/CSEA Scholarship awarded by the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section office at a ceremony at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi on Tuesday. Charter was the top female student-athlete selected to represent the Delta League and will receive a $600 scholarship.
“I think it is a really nice culmination of the past four years and represents how crucial water polo and participating in athletics has been for me,” said Charter. “I have always thought the game is more than winning and losing and I this award highlighted that it is something that builds character and it is more than me, it takes a team.”
Charter played water polo and swam for all four years each. In water polo, her teams were Section Division I runners-up three times and she was first-team all-Section twice and an all-American nominee her senior year. She was named an academic all-American three times, is a member of CSF and has been a member of the General Excellence honor roll all four years. She’s a core service leader at the Asian Community Center and a member of the St. Francis retreat team as well as a community basketball coach. Lauren has a 4.23 GPA and will attend UC Berkeley, where she will play water polo and major in biochemistry with the future goal of becoming a trauma or pediatric surgeon.
The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section awarded $33,800 in scholarships to the 48 winners of the A. Dale Lacky/CSEA Scholarships for outstanding athletic performance, community service and academic success during their four years of high school.
The award, named after former Section and State CIF President, A. Dale Lacky, recognizes the top male and female student-athletes within the Section.
All schools were allowed to play one extra volleyball game and an extra boys and girls basketball game with 50 percent of the gate going directly to the foundation for the scholarships. More than $25,000 was generated through the foundation games.
Charter is the fourth Troubadour to be awarded the Lackey scholarship in school history.
