SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team improved to 3-0 in Delta League play with a pair of wins this week over Sheldon and Pleasant Grove. The Troubadours have now won 34 consecutive Delta League matches dating back to 2015.

The Troubadours (9-1) swept Sheldon on Tuesday at Rio del Oro Racquet Club, dropping just three games in singles play. Sophomore Alisha Anwar was a straight set winner at No. 1 singles, while four players were 6-0, 6-0 winners including junior Adithi Benush (No. 2), junior Samantha Sonntag (No. 3) and junior Peyton Spellacy (No. 6).

“I feel like my serve was really on and I stayed consistent throughout the match,” said Sonntag. “My forehands were really good and I worked on my slices.”

Junior Bianca Ariza also posted a straight set win at No. 5.

The Troubies were equally impressive in doubles. Senior Roya Pahlavan and sophomore Rosmy Alengaden defeated Katie Yang and Cherry Nguyen at No. 1 by the score of 6-0, 6-2. Sophomores Emmy Goebels and Maddie Brown won at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Olivia Hazaghazam and freshman Lauren Lai won at No. 3.

St. Francis returned to action Wednesday at Pleasant Grove, defeating the Eagles 8-1 by winning five of the six singles matches and all three doubles.

Alisha Anwar (No. 2), Sonntag (No. 3), Evans (No. 4), Arizona (No. 5) and Pahlavan (No. 6) were winners in singles.

“We went today and worked on our skills while playing the hardest we could play,” said Ariza. ‘We are working together as a team.”

Freshman Saafa Umar and Brown were winners at the top spot in doubles, while freshman Lauren Lai and sophomore Siena Vincent posted a straight set win at No. 2. Freshman Ella Dichiara and sophomore Jenna Fratus also were winners at No. 3.

St. Francis has now won five straight matches after winning their final three matches at the Golden State Classic at Stanford last weekend.

“Every match we played at Stanford was good competition,” said Sonntag. “It was good to see each and every one playing as a team and doing well throughout the match.”

St. Francis travels to Davis and Elk Grove next week.
