Davis Hands Tennis First Defeat 6-3
DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team lost at Davis 6-3 in the first meeting between the schools as members of the Delta League Wednesday afternoon.
“Overall, it was a good team effort,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “We knew it was going to be a tough match. By playing them today, we are going to learn a few things about them and we play them on our home courts next time. It is good to have a really tough match.”
St. Francis (1-1) got victories from freshmen Kiya and Kyla Jackson at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively. Kiya won at No. 2 when her opponent retired due to an illness after leading 3-2 in the first set, while Kyla posted a straight set win over Angela Donahue 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Annie Gianulias also won in two sets at No. 4, taking a tiebreaker 7-6 in the first and won 6-3 in the second to close out the match against Meagan Ewens.
Davis split the singles matches with the Troubadours, winning at No. 1, 4 and 6, and swept the three doubles matches.
St. Francis will compete in the 2014 Best of Sacramento Showcase (BOSS) Tournament this weekend. They will face Del Oro in the opening round on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The complete bracket for the tournament can be found here.
