STOCKTON, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team finished third at the 2013 Sac-Joaquin Section/Les Schwab Tires Masters girls golf tournament at The Reserve at Spanos Park Monday.

“I think overall I am extremely pleased,” said Head Coach Cindy Mah-Lyford. “I think this will spark them and we will have six very motivated girls for next week.”

St. Francis, the Division I North champion, entered the tournament undefeated on the season and had won the Masters tournament six of the last seven years (Christian Brothers won in 2011).

Seniors Emily Laskin and Victoria Vardanega each carded rounds of 83 to lead the team. Junior Victoria Ramirez recorded a personal-best 87 to help the Troubies secure one of the three advancing spots.

“I had a few birdies and hit most of the fairways,” said Ramirez. “It feels good (to help the team).”

The Troubadours also counted an 89 by senior Ileana MacDonald and a 90 by sophomore Kristi Lee. Sophomore Kate Swanson posted a 93 on Monday but her score did not count in the format.

Rocklin was the team winner with a score of 429, followed by East Union (430) and St. Francis (432). All three teams advance to the CIF Northern California Regional Tournament at Spring Creek Country Club in Ripon to be held on Monday, Nov. 4.

Vista del Lago’s Emilee Hoffman was the medalist with a 2-under-par 70. She was followed by Woodcreek’s Brianna Areia (72), Roseville’s Virgie Velasquez (74) and Pleasant Grove’s Sarah Debnekoff (74). All four individuals advance to NorCals next week.

“We are very grateful to have the opportunity to play NorCals one more time,” said Vardanega. “We as seniors did not play to the best of our ability today. The greens were hard and our ball striking was not as good as it could have been. We are going to try our best at NorCals.”

The Troubadours finished second last season at NorCals to advance to the state championships.
