Golf Finishes Fourth at Masters
STOCKTON, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team finished tied for
fourth at the Sac-Joaquin Masters tournament at the Reserve at
Spanos Park, missing qualifying for the NorCal Championships by
10 strokes.
“It was a fun team to be with because everyone contributed,” said Head Coach Cindy Mah-Lyford. “It was not just the top five. This team, this year you never knew who was going to make the matches in the qualifying. It made everyone feel they were part of the team.”
St. Francis shot a 459 team score to tie with Vista del Lago for fourth place overall. Granite Bay was the top qualifier with a 406 followed by Oak Ridge at 422 and Rocklin at 450.
Seniors Kristi Lee and Mikia Fang led the team with identical rounds of 15-over par 87, while classmate Kate Swanson posted a 94. All three players played their final prep match on Monday.
“It is always sad to say goodbye to the seniors,” said Mah-Lyford. “I enjoy getting to know them, while working with them and watching them improve as people. I hate the last tournament because it is time to say goodbye. I know they have super bright futures ahead.”
Sophomore Chase Saca carded a 95, while freshmen Olivia Alcoran shot a 96 and Patricia Sweeney posted a 97.
St. Francis won the Delta League title with an undefeated dual match mark and won all three league center 18-hole matches. The Troubadours advanced from the Division I North Tournament last week with a third-place finish.
Swanson joined freshmen teammates Alcoran and Sweeney on the all-league team.
“Kate has been a player that we could look to for good solid scores,” said Mah-Lyford of Swanson. “More importantly, all the players look up to her as their leader. She is well-liked and what she means to the other players is her biggest contributing factor to the team.”
The golf team will host a banquet at a future date to celebrate the season.
