Gregg Hopes to Continue Playoff Run against Enochs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – During spring break, the St. Francis campus was mostly quiet. But junior soccer player Anna Gregg still got her usual workouts in, pounding ball after ball into the net with her father retrieving each rocket off her leg.

“Twice every week we go out to the field and I work on my shots,” said Gregg of their routine. “I usually work on my right foot, working on the power and looking to find the corners. With my left foot, I try to get a lot of reps in to try and get it as good as my left foot. My dad helps me a lot. He is a great supporter and he is my No. 1 fan.”

Gregg’s work ethic has helped her become one of the most prolific scoring players in the state of California. She routinely fights off double and triple teams as teams attempt to slow her progress and limit her shot attempts.

“It is definitely difficult,” said Gregg of the attention. “I hear the coaches say watch No. 25, mark No. 25 and double team her. It is definitely intimidating knowing there are three girls out for you. My dad says take it as a challenge.  Overcome the challenge and put a couple in the net and you will win.”

Gregg, who also plays for Placer United, has been doing just that. She has led the team with a Delta River League leading 24 goals this season, scoring a team-best 54 points. She has scored in 16 different games, recording two or more goals five times and notching three hat tricks on the season.

She has been recruited by several Division I soccer programs but has committed to Colorado College, a decision she made over a year ago during the winter break of her sophomore season.

“I am sure of my decision,” said Gregg. “Colorado College is a great place. It is not well known but they are Division I and have made it to the NCAA Tournament two years in a row. It is really impressive for them as a small school. It is a great community and I love it there.”

Today, Gregg and her teammates will face another test in fifth-seeded Enochs in a Sac-Joaquin Section second round game.

“I think we have the potential to go all the way,” said Gregg. “Enochs is going to be a tough game. I have heard they are physical but so are we.”

Enochs is the No. 5 seed in the bracket and enters with a 17-1 overall record. The Eagles have six players with five or more goals on the season including leading scorer Caleigh Hufans with 15 goals.

Game time is 3:30 p.m. at St. Francis.
