Soccer Wins Cal Spring Classic on Penalty Kicks

WOODLAND, Calif. – Junior Raegan Jobe converted the winning penalty kick to help St. Francis post a victory over Whitney in the championship game of the Cal Spring Classic Saturday night. The Troubadours had a 3-2 advantage in the penalty kicks to capture the title.

“It was great,” said Jobe after the game. “I was a little nervous but I tried to stay calm. It is a good way to start the season and gives us confidence that we can succeed.”

Junior Anna Gregg scored the first goal for the Troubadours in the first half, recording her fifth of the weekend, to give St. Francis the 1-0 lead. Whitney answered in the second half to tie the game. The game remained tied the rest of regulation and through two five minute overtime periods, forcing the penalty kicks.

“It was very exciting,” said Head Coach Rosella Kelly. “It was a nail biter the whole game. They played really hard and earned it. They stayed in there strong.”

Both teams missed on their first attempts before converting with their second shooters. Junior Gabby Turnbill and Emma Granner converted their shots to take a 2-1 advantage. Whitney tied it at 2 before Jobe connected. The Wildcats had the final shot with a chance to tie it but it was off the mark hitting the post.

St. Francis advanced to the championship by recording two wins on Friday and posting a 1-1 tie with Roseville Saturday morning. Gregg scored the only goal for St. Francis on an assist from Carmel Stralen.

Goalie Mia Arostegui had 14 saves on the day, including eight in the championship game.

“I am so proud of her,” said Kelly. “It was a lot of games and she made some incredible saves. She saved us a few times. She was a leader out there from the back.”

St. Francis went 3-0-1 on the weekend to claim the title. Gregg led the team with five goals, scoring at least once in each contest.

“It gives me an idea where I am going to play people,” said Kelly. “When I first walked in I had an idea but some players changed my mind because they stepped up in different positions.”

The Troubadours play two road games this week starting at Del Oro Tuesday. The JV team plays at 5:30 p.m., while the varsity takes the field at 7 p.m.
