Tennis Season Ends in Section Quarters; Four Earn All-League
LOOMIS, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team has its season end in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs Tuesday with a 9-0 loss at Del Oro.
“We knew going in today it was going to be a tough match,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “Del Oro has not lost all season. I wanted my girls go out and play the best they can. I wanted it to be a culmination of all the hard work from day one of tryouts all the way until the end.”
The Troubadours were swept in straight sets in all six singles matches and lost each of the three doubles but fought hard until the end.
Seniors Martina Penalosa and Christina Marengo played the match of the afternoon. They fought back to tie the match at one set each before falling 7-5 in the third set at the No. 1 doubles position. They were part of a group of nine seniors on the team this season.
“We had a huge senior class including seven of our top 12 players,” said Spector. “They had to be role models in carrying their work load and college application duties. They were great leaders.”
Four players earned Delta River All-League honors by a vote of the league coaches. Sophomore Avery Spector joined seniors Kendall Spector, Jane Sadler and Anna Kropf earning selection to the team.
“We have a great group of girls coming up and we are going to work with them in the offseason to help fill that void,” said Spector.
St. Francis finished 9-3 overall on the season.
