Tennis Wins B.O.S.S. Tournament to Open Season
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team won the Best of Sacramento Showcase Saturday with a 9-0 win over McClatchy, completing a perfect opening weekend. The Troubadours advanced to the finals with a 9-0 win over Bella Vista Saturday morning and opened the tournament with a 6-3 win over Granite Bay.
“We went in trying to play the best of our abilities and the best that we can,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “Everyone stepped up. The scores did not indicate how tough the matches were. They were on the court for a long time.”
St. Francis (3-0) swept all six singles matches in the final, losing just 16 games over 12 sets. Senior Avery Spector posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Shirley Kwong at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Kyla Jackson defeated Rachel Wagner at No. 2. and sophomore Kiya Jackson won at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Marisa Fat, freshman Myra Anwar and junior Annie Gianulias also posted wins.
In the morning match, the Troubies did not drop a set and lost just 20 games in the entire match to post a 9-0 win over Bella Vista.
St. Francis won its opener on Friday with a 6-3 win over Granite Bay, With Spector sidelined with an illness, the team played up in singles. Fat won a tough three-set battle 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) by taking a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set. She was undefeated in three matches for the weekend.
Anwar won her initial prep match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Peince Koger at No. 6 singles. She also played at No. 1 doubles in the semifinal, pairing with Megan Kahn for a straight set win. Kahn also won with Abby Benvenuti at No. 1 doubles in the finals and Eden Elliott at No. 2 doubles in the opener.
Gianulias posted three wins on the weekend in singles, while Benvenuti captured two singles wins to go with her win in doubles in the final.
Junior Sabrina Voeller and sophomore Cameron Parra paired for three doubles wins and sophomore Stephanie Fong and freshman Cecilia Crowley won two matches.
“Everyone stayed and supported each other,” said Spector. “We have a great group of girls and a great group of parents. It was a great confidence boost and was important to get the match experience before we hit league play.”
St. Francis will host Rocklin in a scrimmage match on Tuesday. It was originally scheduled to be played at Rocklin.
