Volleyball Advances with Win over Granite Bay

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After meeting in the Sac-Joaquin Section finals each of the last two years, one school was going to miss the final in 2014 as No. 4 seed St. Francis and No. 5 seed Granite Bay squared off Thursday night. The Troubadours prevailed with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 win at St. Francis.

“It is really exciting,” said senior Kylie Green. “I am really proud of what we have done this month and throughout the season. I am excited for our next game.”

Rivalry Renewed
St. Francis and Granite Bay Meet Again

Granite Bay and St. Francis meet again with a lot on the line. Granite Bay, the defending state and section champion, eliminated the Troubadours last season in both the Nor Cal and Section Championships. 

“It seems to be the match we all look forward to and prepare for every day at practice,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “Both teams are talented and Granite Bay is well coached. We know we have to bring our best every time we play them.”

Nine St. Francis Seniors Make College Commitments

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Nine St. Francis High School seniors signed a National Letter-of-Intent or made a commitment to play collegiate sports next year at schools across the country Wednesday. They were recognized on campus as part of the school’s formal fall signing day recognition.

The event was broadcast on the TroubieTV Network on PlayOn Sports.

Volleyball Wins Section Opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team opened the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs with a 3-0 win over Woodcreek Tuesday night.

“It was a good team win,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “Ashley Sutter was all over the place and Mary-Kate Schildmeyer and Lizzy Corfee had some nice swings.”

The Troubadours broke open a close game in the first set with an 18-4 run after it was tied at 7 in the early going.

Volleyball Celebrates Seniors and Win over Grant

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For one night, they were the queens of the court. The St. Francis volleyball team celebrated their nine seniors in a pre-game ceremony before posting a 25-5, 25-0, 25-9 victory over Grant to close out the 2014 regular season.

“It was a fun night,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “The seniors had fun and they played pretty well.”

The Troubadours opened the match with a 25-5 win in the first set before posting a 25-0 win in the second. Marissa Gollnick served out the complete game. The Troubadours closed out the match with a 25-9 win in the third.

The Davis Blue Devils upset St. Francis in five sets 3-2 Thursday night in a come-from-behind effort to hand the Troubadours their second loss in Delta League play this season.

Gollnick Commits to Play Volleyball at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Marissa Gollnick has committed to play volleyball and attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology next fall. Gollnick will sign with the Fightin’ Engineers on Nov. 12.

“I have been looking at engineering schools,” said Gollnick, who is from Elk Grove. “It is what I have always wanted to do. My sister went to a small engineering school and when my parents were looking for her they ran into Rose-Hulman.”

Volleyball Falls in Semifinals at Super 8

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Campolindo defeated Christian Brothers in three sets to win the St. Francis Super 8 Tournament on Saturday. They won by scores 25-15, 21-15 and 15-12.

Campolindo reached the final with an upset over El Camino in three sets 25-16, 24-26, 15-10. Christian Brothers advanced to the final with a three-set win over St. Francis in the semifinals.

The Troubadours went 2-2 on the day, posting wins over St. Mary’s and Oak Ridge in pool play before falling to El Camino in straight sets.

Super 8 Volleyball Tournament Set for Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team will host its annual Super 8 Tournament on Saturday featuring Campolindo, Christian Brothers, El Camino, Granite Bay, Oak Ridge, St. Mary’s and Vintage.

Games start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and tickets are available at the door. St. Francis will have a snack bar and tournament t-shirts available.

Volleyball Wins at Sheldon

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team defeated Sheldon 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 Thursday night behind a team effort.

“It was a great team win,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “It was fun to see everybody make plays and everyone made at least one big play to contribute to the overall win. It was fun to see a few kids who have not got to play a whole lot out there and enjoying themselves. The team rallied around them.”

St. Francis (23-9) jumped out to a quick lead and cruised to a win in the opening set.

Volleyball Wins Consolation Bracket at Stockton Classic

STOCKTON, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team went 3-1 at the Stockton Classic held at San Joaquin Delta College, winning the consolation bracket with a straight set win over Oak Ridge 26-24, 25-19. Senior setter Marissa Gollnick was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Troubadours opened the tournament with a three-set loss to Notre Dame of Belmont. They then won a pair of three-set matches with Maria Carillo and Presentation.

St. Francis returns to Delta League play on Tuesday at Elk Grove.

Davis Downs Volleyball in Five Sets

DAVIS, Calif. – The Davis Blue Devils upset St. Francis in five sets 3-2 Thursday night in a come-from-behind effort to hand the Troubadours their second loss in Delta League play this season.

St. Francis was leading 2-0 after winning identical 25-22 victories in the first two sets, but Davis kept the match alive with a 25-19 win in the third. St. Francis fought off two-set points and failed to capitalize on three match points before Davis tied the match with a 30-28 win in the fourth.

St. Francis Volleyball Takes Down Pleasant Grove 3-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a battle of the top two teams in the Delta League standings, St. Francis swept Pleasant Grove Tuesday night to create a tie atop the standings at 7-1.

“I think we really meshed well as a team tonight,” said senior Anna Donald. “We played for each other. We did not just play as individuals.”

Senior Corfee Leads Volleyball with Strong Family Contingent Supporting

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Lizzy Corfee had nine kills to help St. Francis post a three-set 3-0 win over Monterey Trail Tuesday night.

“I think we all came together really well,” said Corfee. “Not many balls hit the floor and we managed to stay together. When they had a run, we were able to keep it together and still play strong.”

Corfee had nine kills in the contest with two digs.

“I think I played better today,” said Corfee.

Volleyball Defeats Franklin on the Road

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team won 3-0 in straight sets over Franklin Thursday night 25-14, 25-21, 25-9.

Senior Kylie Green had a team-best 11 kills, while senior Anna Donald had four block assists and senior Marissa Gollnick recorded 21 assists in the match.

St. Francis (15-7, 4-1) returns home to host Monterey Trail. Matches begin at 4:30 p.m. with the freshman game followed by the JV and varsity contests.

Volleyball’s Candice Reynoso Living Her Dream

Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.

Candice Reynoso accomplished a rare feat making the St. Francis volleyball team for the first time this year. It was unique in that most would still not be trying, let alone make the varsity, as a first-time player as a senior.

“Ever since freshmen year it has been my goal to make the St. Francis volleyball team,” said Reynoso, who is a product of St. Ignatius. “Because I have not made it, it made me more determined to prove that I can do it.”

P.A.L Volleyball Tournament Set for Saturday, Oct. 4

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball program with host a one-day Parochial Athletic League Tournament at St. Francis on Saturday, Oct. 4.

The field for the event includes Our Lady of Assumption, St. Patrick’s, St. John Notre Dame and Holy Family in Pool A. St. John Evangelist, St. Ignatius, St. Michael’s and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton are the four schools in Pool B.
