Gregg Named River Cats Girls Soccer Player of the Year
17 Troubadours Named to All-City Teams

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis junior soccer player Anna Gregg was named the River Cats Girls Soccer Player of the Year at the High School Awards Ceremony before Sunday’s game against the Tacoma Rainers.

“It means so much and feels so great,” said Gregg of the Player of the Year honor. “I set a goal to help to the section championship and that was accomplished. I could not be happier.”

Gregg and her St. Francis teammates captured the Sac-Joaquin Section title on Saturday on her goal to defeat Oak Ridge 1-0.

17 Troubadours Named to River Cats All-City Teams

SACRAMENTO, – Calif.  – Seventeen St. Francis Troubadours have been named to the 2013-14 River Cats All-City  teams and will be recognized on Sunday at the High School Sports Awards Ceremony before the River Cats take on the Tacoma Rainiers at 1:05 p.m. at Raley Field.

The St. Francis All-City fall sports selections include senior golfer Emily Laskin, volleyball seniors Ali Koumelis and Anna Baytosh and cross country runners Lauren LaRocco, Madison Rawson and Miranda Myers.

Four Student-Athletes Honored by SFHS Booster Club

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The SFHS Booster Club recognized four senior student-athletes at the 2014 Awards Ceremony.

Senior Lauren LaRocco was named the SFHS Booster Club Scholar-Athlete Scholarship recipient, while Brinnley Barthels, Emily Laskin and Jane Sadler were named winners of the SFHS Booster Club Leadership Scholarship.

Frech to Play Water Polo at Sierra College

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Hannah Frech will play water polo at Sierra College next year.

“I have been playing at Sac Polo for the last four years at Sierra College,” said Frech. “I have got to know all the coaches. I am really excited about going there.”

Frech scored six goals and recorded three assists during the season to go with 15 steals, helping the St. Francis team to an appearance in the section championship.

Eight St. Francis Seniors Make Commitments Bringing Total to 32

The Troubadour commitments include Allison Autrey (Diving, UC Davis), Brinnley Barthels (Water Polo, Pacific), Ryanne Brust (Lacrosse, Fort Lewis),  Alexa LoGiudice (Volleyball, Dominican), Ileana MacDonald (Golf, Chico State) and Alexis Viramontes (Softball, CSU Dominguez Hills).

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Eight St. Francis High School seniors have signed a National Letter-of Intent or made commitments to play collegiate sports next fall for the NCAA signing period that began today. Overall, thirty-two Troubadour student-athletes have now made commitments to play collegiately next year.

Former Troubadour Water Polo Player Kolokotronis Earns Honor

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – Brown women’s water polo freshman Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) received Rookie of the Week honors, it was announced by the Collegiate Water Polo Association league office on Tuesday.

Kolokotronis teamed with senior Kate Woods to power a dramatic 15-14 double overtime victory at George Washington on March 1. Kolokotronis tied her career high with three goals and grabbed two steals to help Brown improve to 4-4 on the season.

She has eight goals, seven assists and 11 steals on the season.

#FeatureFriday: St. Francis Athletics Adds Ketcham as Assistant AD for Sports Medicine

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Bumps and bruises are her specialty but Kelly Ketcham brings much more to the St. Francis High School community.

Ketcham was named the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine for the St. Francis Athletics Department staff recently after working with the Troubadour student-athletes and teams as the school’s athletic trainer for the last four years. The title was effective in November 2013.

Water Polo Trio Earns Academic All-America Honors

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Three St. Francis water polo players garnered Academic All-America honors from USA Water Polo with outstanding achievement designation for qualifying with a 4.0 GPA or better.

The three Troubies include senior Eileen Walsh and juniors Emily Reinl and Lauren Charter.

Barthels Named Player of the Year at Banquet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Brinnley Barthels was named the Player of the Year at the St. Francis Water Polo annual banquet.

Barthels was among five players honored on Dec. 12. Sophomore Maggie Oys was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year, while senior Eileen Walsh was the Defensive Player of the Year. Senior Cherie Murbach was the Most Improved Player. Senior Jenna Bellinger earned the Most Inspirational Award.

Four Water Polo Players Earn Section Honors

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Brinnley Barthels and junior Lauren Charter both were named to the CIF Sac-Joaquin All-Section water polo first- team and were among four Troubadours overall earning section honors.

Charter tied for third on the team with 28 goals with a team-best 18 assists and a team-best 47 steals during the season. She averaged 1.48 points per game, the second-best average on the team.

Water Polo Drops Section Final to Davis

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Davis handed St. Francis an 11-3 loss in the Sac-Joaquin Section final Saturday at the Roseville Aquatic Complex. The two schools have now met in the section finals for each of the last 10 seasons.

St. Francis got goals from Eileen Walsh, Jennalyn Barthels and Brinnley Barthels but did not score until the Blue Devils had opened the game with six goals over the first nine minutes.

LODI, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team overcame a four-goal deficit to post a sudden death victory over Granite Bay in the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals at Tokay High School Wednesday.

Sophomore Julie Zanobini, who lives in Davis, scored the game winner at the 2:41 mark of the second overtime, advancing St. Francis into the section finals for the 10th consecutive season.

“It was awesome,” said Zanobini. “It is probably the best feeling I have ever had.”

TOKAY, Calif. – Eileen Walsh scored two goals and St. Francis played a solid game defensively to post a 6-4 victory over St. Mary’s in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Girls Water Polo team championships.

Walsh tied the game in the second quarter at one and gave the Troubies a 3-1 lead early in the fourth that sparked a four-goal period.

Water Polo Advances with 17-3 Win over Atwater

MODESTO, Calif. – Junior Lauren Charter scored three times to lead St. Francis to a 17-3 win over Atwater in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Girls Water Polo team championships.

Charter led a 17-goal attack that had five players score multiple goals. Senior Brinnley Barthels and sophomore Jennalyn Barthels each found the cage two times. Sophomore Maggie Oys and junior Emily Reinl also scored twice in the contest.

Water Polo’s Sophie Rubino Goes the Distance

St. Francis senior water polo goalie Sophie Rubino takes advantage of every moment of every day. And she needs it.

From the time her alarm clock rings at 5 a.m. until she lays down for the night, the day is full. The drive to be successful in school and in water polo at St. Francis High School starts with more than a ride into school each day. From her home in Penn Valley, Calif., Rubino commutes almost 70 miles each way.

Water Polo Closes Nor Cals with Win

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Junior Emily Reinl scored a season-high five goals to lead St. Francis to a 12-4 victory over Lodi in their final game of the Nor Cal Championships. The win ended the tournament on a strong note after three straight losses, including two one goal decisions to Leland and Menlo Atherton.

Senior Brinnly Barthels added two goals in the win over Lodi, scoring in three of the four tournament games.

Barthels Scores Game Winner to Cap Senior Night

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Brinnley Barthels scored with 1:55 left to help St. Francis post a 3-2 victory over Bella Vista. The win closed out a successful night that began by honoring the nine Troubadour seniors.

“It was not pretty tonight but it was a natural letdown after such a big game on Monday,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “All the seniors hit the water and got a little bit of playing time. It was a slow process getting into the game and we had a hard time getting the ball in the cage.”
