Soccer Opens with Two Wins at Folsom Challenge Cup

FOLSOM, Calif. – The St. Francis varsity soccer team defeated Ponderosa on a second half goal by freshman Janae DaFazio Friday night to go 2-0 on the first day of the 2016 season at the Folsom Challenge Cup Friday.

“Ponderosa is a great team,” said Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “They are physical, crafty on the ball and move the ball well. We got better today.”

St. Francis fell behind early when Ponderosa connected for a first-half goal. But sophomore Taylor Simpkins tied the score unassisted in the 18th minute to record her first varsity goal.

Basketball Advances to Section Semifinals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Seniors Kyra Huffman, Lauren Craig and Tia Hay combined for 50 points to lead third-seeded St. Francis to 67-62 win over No. 6 Lincoln of Stockton. The Troubadours (25-4) advance to the section semifinals for the first time since 2011.

Basketball continues its playoff run with a semifinal game in Stockton at the University of Pacific on Tuesday, March 1. Lacrosse is at Davis on March 3 and hosts Palo Alto in its home opener on March 5. Varsity and JV Soccer play at Rio Americano on March 1 and hosts Christian Brothers on March 3. Freshmen Soccer hosts El Camino at St. Francis on March 1 and plays at Pleasant Grove on March 3. Swimming hosts Pleasant Grove for a Booster Que on March 2 at Jesuit. Softball is at River City on March 1 and hosts Ponderosa on March 3.

Basketball Opens Playoffs with Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior guard Tia Hay scored 15 points as No. 3 seed St. Francis advanced with a 81-39 win over No. 14 Woodcreek Tuesday night in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. St. Francis (24-4) advances to face Lincoln of Stockton in a home game on Thursday.

“It was a collective effort,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We had contributions from everyone who went in there. It is really rewarding when you talk about being a team and they did that tonight. The energy from the crowd was fantastic and much appreciated for a first-round playoff game.”

Water Polo Alumnae at Aggie Shootout

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis hosted the Aggie Shootout Saturday but it felt like a St. Francis water polo alumnae gathering with the large number of Troubadours students, alumna and parents in attendance. The Cal Head Coach even called it “National St. Francis Day” at the pool.

Five alumnae were representing three different schools at the Aggie Shootout including Brinnley Barthels ‘14 (Pacific), Lauren Charter ‘15 (UC-Berkeley), Marisa Kolokotronis ‘13 (Brown), Kat Menz ‘12 (UC-Berkeley) and Brooke Vowell ‘12 (UC-Berkeley).

Basketball Earns No. 3 Seed, Chance to Host Playoff Game

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis varsity basketball team was given a No. 3 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Girls Basketball Bracket announced Thursday. The Troubadours (23-4, 14-0 Delta) will host No. 14 seed Woodcreek on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at St. Francis at 7 p.m.

“I think we are positioned well,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We have the opportunity we were looking for and the most important thing on our agenda is Tuesday night against Woodcreek.”

Basketball will host playoff games this week and spring sports start this weekend. Varsity soccer opens play at the Folsom Challenge Cup, while the JV and Frosh teams play at the preseason tournament in Woodland. Lacrosse takes on Cardinal Newman and San Ramon on the road, while softball scrimmages with Roseville (V) and Oak Ridge (JV). The swimming team will have their Red-Gold Meet on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The track and field team will host team time trials on Thursday, Feb. 25. For a complete look at the athletics schedule, click here.

Basketball Claims Delta League Title; Playoffs Await

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis finished the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record with a 93-25 win over Grant Tuesday night, capturing the 2016 Delta League title.

“I am extremely proud of my team,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “They have put in a lot of work and sweat equity and they deserve everything they have got so far. They are playing very well and are sharing the ball. They improved tremendously defensively and, when we are in transition, it is a lot of fun to watch.”

Varsity Basketball Improves to 12-0, Clinches Delta League

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Janae Fairbrook scored 15 points on five three-pointers to help St. Francis to a 71-37 victory over Franklin Tuesday night.

St. Francis (21-4) clinched the Delta League title with the victory with two games remaining in the regular season schedule. The Troubadours travel to Monterey Trail on Friday night before hosting Grant on Tuesday, Feb. 16 for Senior Night.

Basketball Clinches Share of Delta League Title

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis basketball team clinched a share of the Delta League championship with a 90-60 win at Sheldon Friday night. The Troubadours (20-4, 11-0) remained undefeated in league play with three games remaining in the regular season with a three-game lead in the standings.

“Anytime you go undefeated in any league it is a good feeling,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We still have three more games and the story is not written. We have work to do. But through this part of the season, I am very proud of our young ladies.”

Basketball  Wins at Elk Grove

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Aliyah Williams scored 10 points as St. Francis improved to 10-0 in Delta League play with a 69-61 win over Elk Grove. Lauren Craig scored a game-high 26 points for the Troubadours and Kyra Huffman added 11 in the win. Freshman Nika Bagatelos added six points.

Five St. Francis Seniors Commit to Soccer Programs

Five St. Francis seniors signed to play soccer in college next fall and were celebrated at a ceremony on campus Wednesday morning. SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Five St. Francis seniors signed to play soccer in college next fall at schools across the country and were celebrated at a National Signing Day ceremony on campus Wednesday morning.

“It has been awesome to share this with my teammates,” said Hailey Barrett, who will play for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. “I have played with these girls for a few years and they are some of my best friends. I loved watching them sign. It was super cool to experience it with them.”

Soccer’s Wynbrandt to Sign with Hawaii Pacific

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Rhys Wynbrandt will sign with Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday as part of the National Signing Day event for the sport of soccer. St. Francis has five players signing with programs across the country.

“I have had a big dream about Hawaii,” said Wynbrandt. “It has been a big place for me and I have always been inspired by surfers. It has been a huge dream place and is the reason I set my focus on that school.”

Soccer’s Erin Barr to Sign with Master’s College

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Erin Barr will play soccer at The Master’s College next fall.

“The first time I visited there was in 7th grade when my brothers were touring colleges,” said Barr about discovering her college choice. “I was interested but didn’t really know what the school was about. I came back and the coach contacted me about coming for a visit. I loved it. It is a great fit spiritually, academically and athletically.”

Soccer’s Ashley Newland to Sign with Louisiana

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Ashley Newland will sign with the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Wednesday on the National Signing Day for college soccer.

“I am extremely excited to sign and I will probably have the same feeling as committing,” said Newland. “It is official once I sign so I am excited for it.”

Newland picked Louisiana, located in Lafayette, La., for a variety of reasons.

Junior Varsity Takes Down Pair of Eagles

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After a slow start, the St. Francis junior varsity basketball team posted a 45-37 victory over El Camino on Saturday, recording their second win in as many days and fourth straight overall.

“It was a good team effort and we did well,” said freshman Ally Gage, who led the team with nine rebounds.

St. Francis (18-3) was behind early 12-7 in the first quarter, just 22 hours after posting a 54-23 win over Pleasant Grove Friday night. The Troubadours outscored the Eagles 16-5 in the second to take control of the game and never trailed again.

Basketball Edges Pleasant Grove as Senior Lauren Craig Scores 1000th Point

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Lauren Craig scored her 1000th career point in the first half but her back-to-back baskets in the fourth quarter sealed a 44-40 victory over Pleasant Grove Friday night.

“This is probably one of the biggest games of the year,” said Craig. “The fact we won proved we are really coming together as a team.”
