St. Francis Teams Complete Successful 2013-14 Campaign
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis High School athletics department completed the spring campaign on a championship run that included back-to-back Sac-Joaquin Section titles that highlighted another successful season in 2013-14.
After a year that produced two top-10 state championship finishes in 2012-13, the Troubadours were poised to compete across the board again. St. Francis won five league titles in the final season of the Delta River League and tallied three Sac-Joaquin Section titles to increase their all-time section leading total to 89, while recording three section runner-up finishes. Overall, 11 of the 12 programs advanced to postseason play.
Volleyball again led the charge in the fall with a 34-9 overall mark en route to winning their 16th consecutive Delta River League title. Head Coach Alynn Wright, who celebrated her 25th season at St. Francis, led her team to a runner up in both the section and Nor Cal Championships.
Cross Country finished among the Top 10 in the state for the third consecutive year behind the sixth-place finish by senior Lauren LaRocco. Tennis had a solid season and placed tied for fifth in the section tournament while advancing individuals in both singles and doubles. Golf was paced by DRL Player of the Year Emily Laskin as the Troubadours won the league and Division I North titles while making a deep run in the state playoffs. Water Polo finished second in the section under Olympian Heather Moody in her first season at the school.
Basketball posted another winning season and won a section playoff game before falling in the second round.
The winning continued in the spring as Soccer Head Coach Rosella Kelly led her team on a section playoff run behind DRL Player of the Year Anna Gregg. The Troubadours defeated Oak Ridge and earned the No. 1 ranking in the state.
Softball finished fourth in the highly competitive DRL as Co-Head Coach Al LoGiudice completed his 25th season with the school. Lacrosse lost in the first round of the North Coast playoffs. Swimming posted a spirited third-place finish at the section meet after winning the DRL title for the sixth consecutive season with help of a strong contingent on the diving team.
Track and Field closed the season with an impressive team finish behind top individual performances. Head Coach John DuCray led his team to their sixth straight league title and second consecutive section crown. The team set five school records along the way and qualified for a school-best six events at the state meet. LaRocco was fifth in the 3200, while the amazing 4×400-meter relay crossed the line third with a time that ranked among the nation’s Top 10.
Overall, the Troubadours produced 34 student-athletes who signed scholarships or made athletic commitments to play their sports at the collegiate level this fall and had 45 All-Delta River League selections. The Troubadours also placed 17 student-athletes to the Sacramento River Cats All-City team.
