Water Polo Falls at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – St. Francis trailed 6-5 entering the fourth quarter but Davis scored six straight to record a 12-6 win Tuesday at the Schaal Aquatic Center.

“Down by one heading into the fourth was a great opportunity, I was really happy where we were,” said Head Coach Heather Moody. “We had a few mental lapses defensively and that gave them the opportunity.”

Senior Lauren Charter and Sally Ferguson each scored twice in the contest. Juniors Jenna Barthels and Julie Zanobini also scored for the Troubadours.

Tennis’ Spector Reaches Delta League Singles Finals

NATOMAS, Calif. – Junior Avery Spector advanced to the Delta League Singles Championship match with three wins Monday at the Natomas Racquet Club.

Spector, the No. 2 seed, opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Angela Donahu of Davis. In the quarterfinals, she posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Megan Sterk of Pleasant Grove and reached the finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kayla Nguyen of Franklin.

Spector will face No. 1 seed Jacqui Tan of Franklin on Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. Both players advance to the section singles championship with the finals berth.

Gollnick Commits to Play Volleyball at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Marissa Gollnick has committed to play volleyball and attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology next fall. Gollnick will sign with the Fightin’ Engineers on Nov. 12.

“I have been looking at engineering schools,” said Gollnick, who is from Elk Grove. “It is what I have always wanted to do. My sister went to a small engineering school and when my parents were looking for her they ran into Rose-Hulman.”

Golf Advances to Section Master’s with Fourth-Place Finish

FAIR OAKS, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Master’s with a fourth-place finish at the Division I North tournament Monday at North Ridge Country Club.

The Troubadours posted a 455 team score led by junior Kate Swanson, edging Rocklin (463) and Pleasant Grove (470). Oak Ridge won the team title by five strokes over Davis (426) and Granite Bay (446). The top four teams and six individuals will play in the Master’s event on Monday at The Reserve as Spanos Park in Stockton.

Volleyball Falls in Semifinals at Super 8

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Campolindo defeated Christian Brothers in three sets to win the St. Francis Super 8 Tournament on Saturday. They won by scores 25-15, 21-15 and 15-12.

Campolindo reached the final with an upset over El Camino in three sets 25-16, 24-26, 15-10. Christian Brothers advanced to the final with a three-set win over St. Francis in the semifinals.

The Troubadours went 2-2 on the day, posting wins over St. Mary’s and Oak Ridge in pool play before falling to El Camino in straight sets.

Tennis Section Playoff Bracket Announced

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis program opens play in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs on Monday, Nov. 3 against the No. 3 seed Franklin of Stockton from the San Joaquin Athletic Association. The Troubadours will host the first-round matchup at Rio del Oro Racquet Club beginning at 2 p.m. 

The Troubadours posted a 12-3 record on the season, including a 10-2 mark in the Delta League to finish in second place for the second consecutive season. The top 3 teams in the league qualified for the Division I bracket.

Super 8 Volleyball Tournament Set for Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team will host its annual Super 8 Tournament on Saturday featuring Campolindo, Christian Brothers, El Camino, Granite Bay, Oak Ridge, St. Mary’s and Vintage.

Games start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and tickets are available at the door. St. Francis will have a snack bar and tournament t-shirts available.

Volleyball Wins at Sheldon

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team defeated Sheldon 25-15, 25-12, 25-11 Thursday night behind a team effort.

“It was a great team win,” said Head Coach Alynn Wright. “It was fun to see everybody make plays and everyone made at least one big play to contribute to the overall win. It was fun to see a few kids who have not got to play a whole lot out there and enjoying themselves. The team rallied around them.”

St. Francis (23-9) jumped out to a quick lead and cruised to a win in the opening set.

Golf Places Fourth in Third Delta League Match

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team placed fourth in the final Delta League Center match after shooting a 434 team score, securing a spot in the section playoffs with their second place overall finish in the league points.

Juniors Kate Swanson and Mikia Fang each shot rounds of 82, tying for eighth overall in the field. Gurman Kaur of Franklin shot a course-record 10-under par 62 to earn medalist honors.

Junior Kristi Lee posted a round of 86, while freshman Chase Saca carded an 87. Caitlin Autry shot a 99 and freshman Lauren Liberatore posted a 104.

Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Win

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team swept Monterey Trail Monday in the final regular season league match of the season. The Troubadours finished 10-2 in the Delta League, placing second overall in the standings.

Head Coach Kristi Spector sat her No. 2 and 3 singles players, allowing for playing opportunities in both singles and doubles.

Water Polo Closes Home Schedule with Senior Night Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As the final seconds ticked off the game clock, it was fitting that all four seniors were in the water as St. Francis closed its home campaign with a 14-9 win over Granite Bay Monday night.

“It was kinda surreal,” said senior Lauren Charter, who had four goals in the win. “The four years I have here have gone so fast. This was a nice way to end a big part of my experience at St. Francis. It felt good to be with a team that I love and have a good game.”

Volleyball Wins Consolation Bracket at Stockton Classic

STOCKTON, Calif. – The St. Francis volleyball team went 3-1 at the Stockton Classic held at San Joaquin Delta College, winning the consolation bracket with a straight set win over Oak Ridge 26-24, 25-19. Senior setter Marissa Gollnick was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Troubadours opened the tournament with a three-set loss to Notre Dame of Belmont. They then won a pair of three-set matches with Maria Carillo and Presentation.

St. Francis returns to Delta League play on Tuesday at Elk Grove.

Water Polo Drops Two in Clovis

CLOVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis water polo team lost two matches in Clovis Saturday, dropping an 11-5 game to Clovis West and 10-2 decision to Clovis.

The Troubadours trailed 7-4 against Clovis West entering the fourth period but were unable to get a closer. Senior Lauren Charter scored twice and Jennalyn Barthels and Sam Reinl each added goals.

In the second game, Clovis defeated the Troubadours 10-2 with Barthels and Reinl both scoring.

Cross Country Second at Bronco Invite in League Tuneup

FOLSOM, Calif. – The St. Francis cross country team finished second at the Bronco Invitational Saturday with 50 team points as seniors Miranda Myers and Peyton Bilo each posted top-six performances.

“Overall the girls ran very well,” said assistant coach Rich Willet. “We had a good grouping and ran really tight. They ran hard and had good finishes.”

St. Francis, ranked eighth in the latest state rankings by PrepCalTrack.com, placed their top five all within the top 20. Sixth-ranked Clovis North won the meet with 37 points.

Swimmer Mitchell Coordinates Successful Caps for Cancer

EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – Junior swimmer Chloe Mitchell helped raise $2,200 for breast cancer research via her 2014 Caps for Cancer Fundraiser with all the proceeds donated to the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center Breast Cancer research department.

Mitchell was touched by cancer early in her life when two friends lost their mothers to the disease. She wanted to do more than wear a pink shirt or dye her hair.

“The situation inspired me to do something for women who have or had breast cancer to promote research,” said Mitchell.

Cross Country’s Mallory Shingle: A Top Performer

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Most high school kids head to the beach for the summer or Lake Tahoe. But cross country senior Mallory Shingle is not like most of her peers in high school.

Shingle, who hails from Sacramento, is coming off a summer that included time on the Stanford campus working on a neuroimaging study investigating number processing in young adults.

Davis Downs Volleyball in Five Sets

DAVIS, Calif. – The Davis Blue Devils upset St. Francis in five sets 3-2 Thursday night in a come-from-behind effort to hand the Troubadours their second loss in Delta League play this season.

St. Francis was leading 2-0 after winning identical 25-22 victories in the first two sets, but Davis kept the match alive with a 25-19 win in the third. St. Francis fought off two-set points and failed to capitalize on three match points before Davis tied the match with a 30-28 win in the fourth.

Tennis Celebrates Lone Senior Andre with Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior tennis player Alyse Andre is the lone senior on the St. Francis team but her impact has extended well beyond a strong forehand or doubles win.

“Alyse as our only senior more than anything has brought enthusiasm and a fun, free spirit,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “She has always been a doubles or an exhibition player; she never had one of the top singles spots but she has always been positive and encouraging while taking the younger girls under her wing.”

Andre’s influence is evident on and off the court with her teammates.
