The Troubadour tennis team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals for the second consecutive season before losing 5-4 at St. Mary’s. They team advanced in the playoffs with wins over Franklin (S) and Gregori of Modesto.

The team posted a 14-4 overall record under Kristi Spector, including a 10-2 Delta League mark to finish second.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team celebrated their 2014 season during the team banquet last week.

The Troubadour tennis team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals for the second consecutive season before losing 5-4 at St. Mary’s. They team advanced in the playoffs with wins over Franklin (S) and Gregori of Modesto.

Tennis Season Ends in 5-4 Loss at St. Mary’s

STOCKTON, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team lost a tough 5-4 match to St. Mary’s in the quarterfinals of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships. St. Mary’s advanced to face Del Oro in the semifinals.

“I gathered the girls after the match and looking at all of their faces, I told them I was so proud of how hard they worked all season long,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “For such a young team, they came together and improved drastically all season.”

Tennis Advances to Section Quarters

MODESTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Gregori of Modesto Tuesday to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. The Troubadours will face the top seed out of the Tri-City Athletic League St. Mary’s on Monday in Stockton.

St. Mary’s was a 9-0 winner over Merced in a second round match on Tuesday.

Gianulias, Troubadours Advance to Section Second Round

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Annie Gianulias likes to unleash her hard serve on game and match points and she has had plenty of practice during an undefeated sophomore season for the Troubadour tennis program.

“If it is match or game point, I like to hit my serve really hard to try for an ace or get a really good shot,” said Gianulias.

Gianulias posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Daniela Pantoja of Franklin of Stockton at No. 5 singles to improve to 14-0 on the season Monday.

Tennis’ Spector Reaches Delta League Singles Finals

NATOMAS, Calif. – Junior Avery Spector advanced to the Delta League Singles Championship match with three wins Monday at the Natomas Racquet Club.

Spector, the No. 2 seed, opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Angela Donahu of Davis. In the quarterfinals, she posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Megan Sterk of Pleasant Grove and reached the finals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kayla Nguyen of Franklin.

Spector will face No. 1 seed Jacqui Tan of Franklin on Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. Both players advance to the section singles championship with the finals berth.

Tennis Section Playoff Bracket Announced

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis program opens play in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs on Monday, Nov. 3 against the No. 3 seed Franklin of Stockton from the San Joaquin Athletic Association. The Troubadours will host the first-round matchup at Rio del Oro Racquet Club beginning at 2 p.m. 

The Troubadours posted a 12-3 record on the season, including a 10-2 mark in the Delta League to finish in second place for the second consecutive season. The top 3 teams in the league qualified for the Division I bracket.

Tennis Finishes Regular Season with Win

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team swept Monterey Trail Monday in the final regular season league match of the season. The Troubadours finished 10-2 in the Delta League, placing second overall in the standings.

Head Coach Kristi Spector sat her No. 2 and 3 singles players, allowing for playing opportunities in both singles and doubles.

Tennis Celebrates Lone Senior Andre with Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior tennis player Alyse Andre is the lone senior on the St. Francis team but her impact has extended well beyond a strong forehand or doubles win.

“Alyse as our only senior more than anything has brought enthusiasm and a fun, free spirit,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “She has always been a doubles or an exhibition player; she never had one of the top singles spots but she has always been positive and encouraging while taking the younger girls under her wing.”

Andre’s influence is evident on and off the court with her teammates.

Tennis Sweeps Sheldon 9-0

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The Troubadour tennis team lost just eight games in singles and did not drop a set in any of the nine matches in weeping Sheldon 9-0 Monday afternoon. St. Francis improved to 10-3 on the season and 8-2 in the Delta League.

Annie Gianulias remained perfect with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles, improving her overall singles mark to 12-0 on the season. Junior Avery Spector was efficient at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Kyla Jackson and Marisa Fat also dropped just a single game in 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Tennis Wins at Elk Grove 6-3

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Freshman Kyla Jackson posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles as St. Francis won five of six singles matches to post a 6-3 win over Elk Grove on Wednesday.

St. Francis improved to 9-3 on the season and 7-2 in the Delta League.

Jackson led the charge in singles. Freshman Marisa Fat won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Annie Gianulias was victorious at No. 4. Sophomore Abby Benvenuti record a win at No. 5 singles and sophomore Megan Khan lost just a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.

Tennis Loses Close Match to Davis 5-4

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a battle between first-place teams in the Delta League, Davis edged St. Francis 5-4 at the Rio del Oro Racquet Club Monday.

“It shows there has been a lot of progress over the season and it is only going up,” said Spector. “By the time we get to sections and playoffs, it is going to be better.”

The Devils came back in doubles, sweeping all three matches to claim the victory. St. Francis, who lost 6-3 to Davis earlier this season, won four of six singles matches and lost the other two in three sets, indicating the closeness of the match.

Tennis Freshman Marisa Fat Enjoying Team Play

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Freshman Marisa Fat is accustomed to competing by herself. But the Sacramento native is enjoying being part of a team and is playing a big role in the success of the St. Francis tennis team.

“It has been really fun and I actually enjoy it a lot,” said Fat. “Even though tennis is an individual sport, I like the experience of being on a team and having people that support you. It has been really good.”

Tennis Wins Seventh in a Row

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Annie Gianulias improved to 9-0 on the season to lead St. Francis to an 8-1 victory over Pleasant Grove Wednesday night.

“I stayed consistent and had a good attitude when I have been behind and not let that affect me,” said Gianulias, who has played at the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions. “I was able to move her around and strategize shots.”

Gianulias won without losing a game and posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Emily Le at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore Abby Benvenuti recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
