Tennis Celebrates Seniors with Win; Seal Delta League title

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team defeated Franklin 7-2 Tuesday to complete the season sweep over the Wildcats and move one win closer to posting a perfect league season. The Troubadours also celebrated their six seniors before the match.

“Being part of tennis the past four years and seeing the team grow stronger each year has been awesome,” said senior Annie Gianulias. “We started out third in the league our freshmen year and we have built our way up to No. 1. It is pretty cool to see how we have grown together.”

Tennis Posts Perfect Week with Two Sweeps

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team posted a perfect week, recording two 9-0 sweeps in Delta League play. The Troubadours defeated Elk Grove on Tuesday and Sheldon on Thursday, moving closer to clinching the Delta League title.

Sophomore Myra Anwar and juniors Kiya Jackson and Kyla Jackson played in both matches in singles, winning each in straight sets. Six other players including seniors Abby Benvenuti and Annie Gianulias, juniors Marisa Fat and Cameron Parra and freshman Adithi Benush and Samantha Sonntag posted singles victories.

Tennis Starts Second Half with 9-0 Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Abby Benvenuti posted an unblemished 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over Angela Emerick as St. Francis posted a 9-0 win over Pleasant Grove on Tuesday. The Troubadours improved to 9-2 overall and 8-0 in league play.

St. Francis swept all six singles positions, losing a total of nine games while taking all 12 sets. Sophomore Myra Anwar won at No. 1, freshman Adithi Benush was a winner at No. 2. Juniors Kiya Jackson, Kyla Jackson and Marisa Fat were also winners for the Troubies.

Tennis Posts 7-2 Win over Monterey Trail

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Kiya Jackson stepped up to No. 1 singles as St. Francis remained undefeated at 6-0 after the first-half of Delta League play with a 7-2 win over Monterey Trail at the Rio del Oro Racquet Club.

Jackson, who posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lisa Cummings, set the tone as all six singles players won in straight sets. Sister Kyla Jackson won at No. 2 and junior Marisa Fat failed to lose a game at No. 3. Senior Abby Benvenuti was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4, while both senior Annie Gianulias and senior Sabrina Voeller blanked their opponents.

Tennis Takes Matchup with Franklin 7-2

ELK GROVE, Calif. – St. Francis and Franklin tied for the Delta League tennis title last year and had the first match against their rival circled on the schedule. The Troubadours made the first statement of the season with a 7-2 win over the Wildcats at Laguna Creek Racquet Club to take over first-place in the league standings.

“We have been looking forward to Franklin knowing it would be one of our toughest matches all season,” said senior Sabrina Voeller. “It feels very good to win. It is amazing.”

Tennis Shuts Out Sheldon in Delta Dual

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Myra Anwar led a sweep in singles to help St. Francis post a 9-0 win over Sheldon in a Delta League dual match at Rio del Oro Racquet Club. The Troubadours improved to 4-0 in league play heading into a match against rival Franklin on Thursday.

“Everyone played really well today and put out their best efforts, trying to improve and get pumped up for the Franklin match,” said sophomore Myra Anwar.

Anwar defeated Sheldon’s Krista Lee at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2 to improve to 4-4 overall at the top position.

Tennis Improves to 3-0 in League Play

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team improved to 3-0 in Delta League play with two wins this week. The first came in a 7-2 victory over rival Davis across the Causeway on Tuesday, while the team returned home Thursday to post a 9-0 win over Elk Grove.

ELK GROVE, Calif. – St. Francis won the Delta League opener with a 9-0 sweep of Pleasant Grove on Thursday. St. Francis swept all six singles matches in straight sets and repeated the feat in doubles to record a perfect opening match.

2015 Tennis Highlights

  • The Troubadour tennis team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals. They advanced with wins over Vacaville (9-0) and Del Oro (5-4).
  • The team posted a 15-2 overall record under Kristi Spector, including an 11-1 Delta League mark to finish tied for first with Franklin. It was the first league title since 2012.
  • St. Francis senior Avery Spector was named the Delta League Most Valuable Player by a vote of the coaches and earned all-league honors for the third consecutive season. Spector finished the season with a 13-4 dual match record and 17-5 overall mark.

Tennis’ Spector Named Delta League MVP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior Avery Spector was named the Delta League Most Valuable Player by a vote of the coaches. Spector led the Troubadour tennis team to a Delta League title and the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals.

“It is one of the best things that has happened to me at St. Francis,” said Spector. “It was really awesome, especially in my senior year. It was definitely a highlight of the season.”

Spector finished the season with a 13-4 dual match record and 17-5 overall mark. She was 10-2 in league matches.

Tennis Season Ends with 6-3 Loss to Rocklin

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis teams lost in the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals to Rocklin 6-3 Wednesday, ending their bid for the first section title since 2011.

“The girls played as hard as they could,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “After the win emotional yesterday, it was tough to turn around and do it again. Rocklin played a great match. Everyone fought their hardest and I am really proud of the team.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis got two doubles wins after splitting six singles matches to defeat Del Oro on Tuesday in the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals 5-4 at Del Oro Racquet Club. The Troubadours advance to host Rocklin on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Tennis Advances in Section Team Tournament

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis tennis team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section quarterfinals with a 9-0 win over Vacaville at Rio del Oro Racquet Club. The Troubadours will host Del Oro on Monday, Nov. 9. Del Oro posted a 8-1 win over Enochs.

“We were solid all the way through,” said Head Coach Kristi Spector. “It was windy today so the girls had to keep their feet moving. I wanted them to play their match their own way.”

St. Francis swept all six singles matches, dropping just seven games over 12 sets.

Jackson Sisters Win Delta League Doubles Title

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Kyla and Kiya Jackson won the Delta League doubles title with 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory in the finals Wednesday and Avery Spector lost a tight match in the singles final 6-3, 6-3. Both will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section singles and doubles championships next week by virtue of reaching the league finals.
