Basketball’s Rogers Excited About Optimist Opportunity

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior guard Susie Rogers is excited about her opportunity to represent her school in the Optimist All-Star game Saturday night at Center High School. Game time is 4 p.m.

“It is cool,” said Rogers, who participated in a pair of practices this week with her teammates. “Everyone is going to be really good so it will be fun. Coach Vic (Pitton) is coaching so that is cool. It is going to be fun.”

Track Wins Dual Meet at Sheldon and Davis; Spring Break Triple Jump Record

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis track team won six events in sweeping its dual meet against Sheldon and Davis on Wednesday.

The Troubadours got two wins by Ariane Arndt in the 400 meters (58.95) and 800 meters (2:22.63). Sophomore Elizabeth Hennessy won the 300m hurdles in 47.60 and set a personal-best in the 100m hurdles in 16.86 to break the 17-second mark for the first time.

In the distance events, Chase Worthen won the 3200 meters in 11:45.01, while Peyton Bilo captured the 1600 meters in 5:22.05.

Softball Falls 8-6 at Franklin

ELK GROVE, Calif. – St. Francis fell to Franklin 8-6 Wednesday. Mary Baccay and Emily Ainsley each had two hits for the Troubadours and four different players knocked in runs. 

St. Francis (6-8) led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Wildcats rallied for sis runs. The Troubies rallied for one run in the seventh but it was not enough. St. Francis returns home on Friday for a game against Monterey Trail. The team also plays in a tournament in Tracy on Thursday and Saturday.

Soccer Wins Sixth Straight on Gregg Hat Trick

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Anna Gregg recorded a hat trick to lead St. Francis to a 4-0 victory over Pleasant Grove Wednesday night.

“We are playing as a team more than ever,” said Gregg. “It feels good to win.”

St. Francis (12-1-1, 6-1-1), which tied the Eagles in their first meeting to start league play last month, won their sixth consecutive overall and fifth straight via shutout, posting a combined score of 28-0 over that stretch.

Track and Field Sets Two School Records at Stanford Invite

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Two school records fell Saturday at the Stanford Invitational as the Troubadours posted several top performances at the Stanford Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Junior Ariane Arndt recorded a personal-best for the second consecutive meet in the 800 meters, clocking a 68 second first lap and closing with a 65-second final lap. She closed strong, passing three runners over the final 100 meters, finishing second in a school record time of 2:13.71. She reset a mark set in 2003 by Ingrid Kantola (2:14.69).

Basketball Head Coach Vic Pitton to Coach Optimist Game, Rogers

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis Head Basketball Coach Vic Pitton has been selected to coach the South team at the Optimist All-Star game on Saturday, April 11 at Center High School in Antelope. The 38th annual Optimist game features many of the area’s top graduating seniors, including St. Francis senior Susie Rogers.

“It certainly is an honor to have the opportunity to coach these fantastic graduating seniors in their final performance,” said Pitton. “I am very blessed to have that opportunity.”

Four Basketball Players Earn Postseason Honors

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Susie Rogers and junior Lauren Craig were both named to the Delta League All-League first-team as selected by the coaches, while juniors Angie Ortiz and Kyra Huffman both earned all-league second-team honors.

Rogers, who was the named the team’s the outstanding defensive player, averaged 7.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists, tying for the league-lead. She also ranked third in the Delta League with 3.0 steals per game.

Junior Arndt Wins Bronco Invite 800 Meters

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Ariane Arndt won the Bronco Invitational Distance Carnival 800 meters Friday night in a personal-best and meet record 2:15.24 among several top performances.

Senior Peyton Bilo was second in the 1600m in 5:03.11 ahead of Arndt in sixth place (5:16.17). Freshman Ava Nkadi was 17th overall. She also was 16th in the 800m (2:30.83).

Junior Chase Worthen was the top finisher in the 3200m in ninth overall (11:52.13).

Softball Falls on Grand Slam in the Seventh Inning

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis softball lost a heartbreaker on a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to Christian Brothers 10-6 in the Albie Swingin event for Cancer Awareness.

The Troubadours rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. Rhyann O’Mara knocked in two runs and Mary Baccay doubled home O’Mara to tie the game. But the Falcons rallied to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning, setting the state for Kira McKechnie, who homered to end the game.

Lacrosse Opens League Play with Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis lacrosse team opened Sacramento Valley Lacrosse League play with a 19-5 win over Bella Vista Tuesday night.

“It felt really good not only because the defense really picked it up but the offense held the team,” said senior goalie Maddie Merwin of the second half shutout. “We ran our plays and did really well working together as a team.”

Soccer Defeats Franklin on Barrett Goal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Hailey Barrett scored the only goal of the game and the St. Francis defense came up strong led by 16 saves by goalies Catie Brown and Allie Carmickle to post a 1-0 victory and hand Franklin their first loss of the season.

“I thought the team did a great job of playing for each other today,” said Interim Head Coach Maryclaire Robinson. “We created a lot of chances in the first half and got a little unlucky in front of the net. Yet they were not deterred. They passed and defended hard.”

Swimming Sweeps Elk Grove in Dual Meet

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – St. Francis swept all 11 events to take a dominating 139-27 victory over Elk Grove at Jesuit High School.

Junior Chloe Mitchell and senior Kristen Lance each won two events. Mitchell won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.00 and returned to take the 100y free in 56.33. Lance won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:21.32 and the 100y breaststroke in 1:14.05.

Softball Opens Delta League Play with Two Wins

DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis softball team opened Delta League play with a pair of wins this week, defeating Pleasant Grove 12-10 on Wednesday and Davis 12-9 on Friday night.

St. Francis (6-4) jumped out to a 10-1 lead over Davis after four innings on the strength of a six-run fourth inning. Senior Danika Bailey started the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Mel Baccay. Shelby Tevis added a run-scoring single and the Troubadours took advantage of two errors and two wild pitches by the Blue Devils.

Lacrosse Falls to Amador Valley 14-8

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis lacrosse team lost a 14-8 game to Amador Valley Saturday at the Mather Sports Complex.

Senior Hayley Kusserow scored three times for the Troubadours but had a hard time containing senior Jackie Gilbert, a USC commit, who scored nine goals in the game.

Amador Valley, ranked as the No. 5 team in Division I in California by LaxPower and one of the Best of the West by US Lacrosse, also got two goals by Sadie Grozier.
