Basketball Escapes with Win at Ponderosa
Three Players Record Double-Digit Rebounds

SHINGLE SPRINGS, Calif. – Susie Rogers recorded a double-double as St. Francis held on late to post a 45-43 victory over Ponderosa Tuesday night in Delta Rover League action.

“Anytime you go into somebody’s house, they are going to be hungry,” said Pitton. “They were ready from the opening tip. We played a roller-coaster game. We played great at times while others we looked completely out of sync.”

Kyra Huffman Leads Victory over Folsom
Sophomore Records Double-Double in Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Kyra Huffman scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead St. Francis to a 48-44 victory over Folsom Thursday night.

“Kyra was a monster on the boards and she made some great hustle plays getting back and forcing deflections on defense,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “It was much needed. She stepped in filled in admirably.”

Huffman, who got the start for injured senior Abby Dow, posted a big double-double to lead the winning effort.

Basketball Dropped by Oak Ridge
Susie Rogers Leads Troubies with 16 Points

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis made a late comeback but it was not enough as Oak Ridge posted a 52-38 victory over the Troubadours Tuesday night.

St. Francis (12-8, 2-2) fell behind by 20 points in the third quarter after scoring just 10 points in the second and third quarters combined, including a 21-2 deficit in the second.

Junior Susie Rogers sparked the comeback with eight fourth-quarter points, adding a pair of three-pointers, a fast break layup and assist on another layup to Abby Dow that cut the lead to 10 points with 3:50 left.

St. Francis PAL Varsity Championships on Sunday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Holy Spirit, St. John the Evangelist and Our Lady of Assumption each posted 2-0 records to advance to the bracket championships Sunday.

The St. Francis basketball program is hosting the first annual Girls PAL Varsity Basketball Tournament, Jan. 25-26. Game times Sunday start at 12:30 p.m.

Participating schools include Holy Spirit, St. Rose, St. James, St. Ignatius, St. John the Evangelist, St. Mary’s, Our Lady of Assumption, Sacred Heart and St. Charles.

Basketball Drops League Game at Pleasant Grove

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Pleasant Grove had three players in double figures in posting a 52-42 victory over St. Francis Thursday night in Delta River League action.

Susie Rogers scored a team-best 16 points behind four three-pointers to lead the Troubadours. Sophomore Lauren Craig posted her ninth double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Five other players each contributed two points.

#FeatureFriday: Senior Guard Kristen Lau a Leader On and Off the Court

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis senior guard Kristen Lau wants to make a difference. Whether it is on the court or on campus, she is driven to create the best for her teammates and classmates.

“Kristen is a very motivated, disciplined self-starter with a positive attitude. She always has a smile on her face with a contagious laugh and a magnetic personality,” said Laura Hanusek, the director of student activities at St. Francis. “You just want to be around her because she makes everyone feel good.”

Late Layup Gives Troubadours Fourth Straight Home Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Danika Bailey hit a layup on a fast break from junior Kristi Edrosolan in the final minute to seal the St. Francis victory over Kennedy 49-48 in a back-and-fourth game on Saturday. The Troubadours remained undefeated at home this season, winning their fourth straight on their home court.

“Kristi came in today and made some big plays,” said Pitton. “She made some major contributions and certainly the last one was huge. Danika saved her one shot for the best right at the end when we needed it.”

Basketball Wins Road Game at Sheldon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Lauren Craig posted her seventh double-double to lead St. Francis to a 54-43 win over Sheldon Friday night in a Delta River League game.

“It is always nice to go into hostile territory and get the win,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We made some mistakes. Overall, our composure is continuing to improve. Once we broke their press, we took advantage and had some good looks.”

Tale of Two Halves: Basketball Takes Delta River League Opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis basketball team scored 41 second-half points to break open a close game to post a 54-26 victory over Ponderosa in the Delta River League opener for both schools. 

The Troubadours led early in the third quarter 19-17 before closing the game on a 35-9 run aided by a turnover producing press and strong passing efforts across the roster.

Basketball Drops Overtime Contest in Holy Hoops Game

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Christian Brothers outlasted a hard-fought effort by St. Francis in overtime 54-46 to record the victory in the annual Holy Hoops matchup in front of a packed gym Saturday night.

St. Francis and Christian Brothers battled all night. The Troubadours took the early advantage with a 9-0 to start the game and led 13-6 after the first eight minutes.

“The start was key but then we hit a long cold spell and allowed them get a fairly good lead before coming back at the half,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton.

#FeatureFriday: St. Francis Athletics Adds Ketcham as Assistant AD for Sports Medicine

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Bumps and bruises are her specialty but Kelly Ketcham brings much more to the St. Francis High School community.

Ketcham was named the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine for the St. Francis Athletics Department staff recently after working with the Troubadour student-athletes and teams as the school’s athletic trainer for the last four years. The title was effective in November 2013.

Strong Defensive Effort and Nine Three-Pointers Lead Basketball to Win

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – The St. Francis basketball team posted a 62-24 victory Thursday night over Oakmont behind the strength of a strong defensive effort and nine three-pointers.

“I thought they really took to heart keeping the tempo up,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “We got after it defensively and we really pushed the ball down the floor. When we had opportunities to shoot, we were looking to shoot the ball.”

Late Three-Pointers Seal Victory over Bella Vista

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With Bella Vista within five points late in the game, junior Susie Rogers and senior Gillian Balbierz hit back-to-back three-pointers to help seal the victory 55-49 for the Troubadours. St. Francis won for the second consecutive game, improving to 8-5 on the season.

“They were definitely big shots,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “It was nice to see them come through in the clutch.”

Basketball Wins Home Opener over Chavez
Freshmen, JV Squads also Post Big Victories

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis basketball team won its home opener with a 65-25 victory over Chavez of Stockton Tuesday night. Sophomore Lauren Craig led the team with 13 points and 12 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Gillian Balbierz and sophomore Susie Rogers each tallied nine points in the winning effort. All twelve Troubadours scored in the contest.

Deol Leads Freshmen to Victory over Del Oro

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Reina Deol scored a game-high 15 points to help the St. Francis freshmen team post a 25-23 victory over Del Oro to avenge their only loss of the season and improve to 12-1. The Troubadours advanced to the finals of the Del Campo Freshman Showcase looking for their fourth tournament title of the season.

Sophomore Craig Making Varsity Impact for Troubadours

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore Lauren Craig made her varsity debut last season as a freshmen and was expected to help Vic Pitton’s Trouabdours in 2013-14. But after averaging 11.1 points and 11.3 rebounds in her first 11 games this season, she is become a major factor now.

After the first couple games she really gained her confidence in her offense,” said Head Coach Vic Pitton. “She is contributing a double-double almost every game. It is been a welcome surprise that she has developed this quickly. We are very pleased.”
