Brust to Play Lacrosse at Puget Sound

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Recent graduate Sarah Brust ’17 will play lacrosse for Puget Sound this fall.

Brust, who will study exercise science, was contacted by the Puget Sound coach after being accepted to the school. She had reached out originally earlier in her career but had decided to hang up her stick in college. As her high school career came to end this spring, she started having doubts.

Alumna LaRocco Finishes 13th at USATF Championships 10K

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – Alumna Lauren LaRocco ‘14 finished 13th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:41.08 at the USATF Championships on Thursday at Sacramento State.

“My goal was to start really conservative,” said LaRocco. “I did not know how I would feel coming down from altitude. I really tried to run my own race and slowly pick off girls. I think I did a pretty good job of it and I was close to one of them at the end.”

Diver Molly Wilson Earns All-America Honor

 

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis rising senior Molly Wilson has been named to the 2016-17 NISCA/Speedo Girls 1-Meter All-America Diving team, joining a select group including just 10 girls from the state of California. Wilson was also among 27 juniors on the team that recognized 100 girls overall.

Wilson was 10th at the CIF State Diving Championships at the Clovis Olympic Complex with a personal-0best 464.75. She is the highest finisher at the state meet in school history in the sport and made her second consecutive appearance at the state meet (2016, 16th).

Washburn Leads Four All-Metro Selections

Lauren Washburn hit a team-best .519 during her senior season over 26 games with 16 runs scored with 28 RBI. She was third overall in the league in hitting, earning Delta League first-team honors.

Sophomore Chloe Smith was also named to the All-Delta League team, hitting .448 with a team-best four triples and three home runs.

Sophomore Catie Caldwell led the team with eight wins in the circle with a 4.17 ERA over 20 appearances.

Track and Field Season Ends at Masters

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team posted eight top-10 finishes and advanced nine competitors to the finals at the Sac-Joaquin Section Finals Friday night.

“The standards at St. Francis are so high for us it is a disappointment to not make it to the state meet,” said Head Coach Rod Jett. “Everyone that ran today, ran well and at or near their seasons bests. This meet has such a high caliber of competition. We had a lot of good marks and personal-bests. It was a great season.”

Sophomore Isabelle Grassel Finishes 11th in Long Jump

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Sophomore Isabelle Grassel has been flying far lately, resulting in a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet. But she almost never started taking off.

“I was not jumping what I wanted to earlier in the season,’ said Grassel. “I was thinking about quitting (jumping). I finally got what I wanted at Delta and made it to sections. You have to never give up. When your season is not going as you wanted it to, you can’t give up. You have to keep going because it could change.”

Softball Seniors Selected for Optimist Game

SACRMENTO, Calif. – Softball seniors Lauren Washburn and Rhyann O’Mara were both selected to play for the South team in the upcoming 40th edition of the Optimist All-Star game on Wednesday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Capital Christian High School.

Washburn hit a team-best .519 during her senior season over 26 games with 16 runs scored with 28 RBI. She was third overall in the league in hitting, earning Delta League first-team honors. O’Mara hit at a .423 clip for her senior season with 17 RBI.

Both were selected to the River Cats All-City team announced last week.

ELK GROVE, CALIF. – The St. Francis Troubadours will run in five individual events and the 4×100-meter relay on Friday seeking berths in the CIF State Track and Field Championships after qualifying at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters on Thursday.

Golfer Selected for Second First Tee Event

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Rising junior Olivia Alcoran has been selected by The First Tee for another Golf and Leadership event this year.  She is one of 96 junior golfers selected nationwide by The First Tee to participate in the 2017 The First Tee Life Skills & Leadership Academy that will take place in East Lansing, MI from July 26 – August 1, 2017.

Wehner Selected as St. Francis’ Valedictorian

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis water polo and swimmer Kayla Wehner has been selected as the school’s valedictorian and will address her class Thursday night at the graduation ceremony at Memorial Auditorium.

“It was really exciting for me,” said Wehner of her honor. “As a freshman I could not have imagined being the valedictorian. Seeing that working really hard in all my classes and things outside of school was able to pay off, it was really cool.”

Ladd Soaring in the Pole Vault

ELK GROVE, Calif. – When your meet ends with a phone call with an Olympian, you probably had a pretty good day. That is what happened to St. Francis freshman Meghan Ladd, who talked to Olympic Gold medalist Stacy Dragila Friday night.

“I don’t know (how it happened) but it was really exciting,” said Ladd. “I have seen her YouTube videos of her winning the Olympics. It was really exciting. I did not believe it at first.”

Track and Field Finishes Third at Section Meet

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team finished third at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships as a host of Troubadours advanced to the Masters meet next week.

“We had lots of personal and season bests and that is how you want to perform at this meet when everyone is peaking,” said Head Coach Rod Jett. “We had a lot of people advance to next week and we will come back again next week and do it again. It will be interesting and fun.”

Wilson Finishes T10th at CIF State Diving Championship

FRESNO, Calif. – St. Francis junior Molly Wilson finished tied for 10th at the 2017 CIF State Diving Championships on Friday, posting a personal-best 464.75 for her 11 dives.

Wilson is the second Troubadour to represent St. Francis at the State meet and the first to qualify in consecutive seasons. She won the Sac-Joaquin Section title for the second consecutive season to earn her spot.

She scored 6.5 points for her team, insuring them a place among the final rankings at the state championships.

Softball Season Ends with Second Round Playoff Loss

VACAVILLE, Calif.  – No. 12 Vacaville pounded out 18 hits and two home runs to defeat No. 13 St. Francis 13-3 in a second-round Sac-Joaquin Section playoff game on Thursday.

Vacaville scored two runs in the first and four in the second to take an early control of the game. St. Francis (14-14) left the bases loaded in the third and only plated one run in the fourth as the inning ended with three runners on board.

“We had a couple hard hit balls and the whole left side of their infield really did a nice job, said Head Coach Kevin Warren.

Track and Field Posts Strong First Day at Sections

ELK GROVE, Calif. – The St Francis track and field team was successful in their goal for the day – advancing to Friday’s finals and setting up several Masters meet runs.

The Troubies were led by their senior leaders in the sprints and hurdles. Meaghan Rogers advanced in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Elizabeth Hennessy was a double qualifier in the 100m and 300m hurdles.

Swimming Claims Frosh/Soph Section Title, Places Sixth in Varsity Meet

LODI, Calif. – The St. Francis swimming and diving teams finished the 2017 season in style by winning the Frosh/Soph division at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships and placing sixth overall in the varsity meet.

“It is amazing winning the team championship as a freshman, swimming with all of my friends,” said Chloe Beebout. “I am really excited. There are so many good freshman and sophomores when we get to our senior year on the varsity team, we are going to kill it.”

Track and Field Finishes Second at Delta League Champs

DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis track and field team finished second at the Delta League finals Friday at Davis Senior High School. The Troubadours qualified several  student-athletes to the Sac-Joaquin Section championships next week.

“No matter what place we get, I like to see our girls come out and see everyone try their best,” said senior captain Meaghan Rogers. “It is the last meet we all come together and see what we can do.”

Softball Earns Section Playoff Bid

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The St. Francis varsity softball team will play Del Oro in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division ii playoffs, the section office announced on Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.

St. Francis, the No. 13 seed, will travel to fourth-seeded Del Oro. The winner will take on the winner of No. 5 Roseville and No. 12 Vacaville on Thursday. Teams will then play a double-elimination tournament at Arnaiz Complex in Stockton.
